Eek Meanest Mom Ever?

Quote:
‘Meanest mom ever’: Should this mom have thrown out her kids’ ice cream?

Hilary Hagerman
April 19, 2016

It’s something most of us have dreamed of: taking a badly-behaved kids’ ice cream cone and dumping it in the trash.

And now, one mom is making headlines for doing just that.

“So… I am the meanest mom ever… Like… Ever,” wrote Jamie Primak Sullivan, star of Bravo’s “Jersey Belle,” on Facebook.

In the post, she explained that she took her kids to Dairy Queen for a treat. After waiting a few minutes for their ice cream, the server called their number.

“The young lady (maybe 17) handed each child their ice cream. Not one looked her in the eye. Not one said thank you. Not to her, not to me,” she wrote.

So, when her kids strolled out the door, she walked out behind them – and promptly scooped up their cones and chucked them in the garbage.

“All 3 launched into mass hysteria.”

“I explained that one day, if they were lucky, they would work a job like that young lady. And I would hope that people would see them. Really see them. Look them in the eye and say thank you,” she continued. “We are too old at 8/7/5 to move through our days without exercising manners and honestly basic human decency.”

“So today, I am the meanest mom in the world.”

Since being posted on April 17, the post has been shared more than 25,000 times – and many are praising the mom of three for taking action.

“As someone who works in a restaurant and deals with people who ignore me when I ask ‘how are you?,’ or sit their money on the counter when I’m holding my hand out for it, or won’t even acknowledge me after I say thank you, have a nice day! Thank you. Thank you for instilling into your children manners and plain human decency!” wrote one commenter.

“Good job, mommy! I waitressed while I was in college getting my teaching degree. I was disrespected many times by adults and also by some of their children who were never taught how to treat someone with respect. Proud of you for raising good human beings,” added another.

However, not everyone is happy with Primak Sullivan’s decision.

“I’m sorry, but this is a fail. First of all you taught them it’s OK to throw good food in the trash. Secondly this was overly harsh,” wrote Dansby Parker. “I could understand if they had been rude, but they weren’t rude. They were merely neutral.”

“They WILL remember this, and no, they won’t remember the ‘lesson’ you were trying to teach. Fear is not an acceptable way to teach your kids, at least not for me,” commented another.

Primak Sullivan shot back in a video, saying this wasn’t the first time she tried to encourage her kids to be more respectful – which is why, this time, she wanted to make a lasting impression. She also likened the situation to a mom getting a cocktail – she wants it, but it doesn’t excuse rude behaviour.

“I’m not running away without acknowledging the bartender and believe me, I need the cosmo more than they need the ice cream,” she joked.
I've learned to say "please" and "thank you"...as a custodian, I've seen kids mess-up a room and take it for granted...they don't deserve Dairy Queen...EVER!

I think the mother was out of line. I mean they are just kids. How about the kids that yell and scream and the parents do NOTHING?? I mean it's not like the kids swore at the waitress. Teaching the kids human decency?? Let's take it easy.

I see adults talking on the phone while being served or checking out of a store w/o acknowledging the cashier. Nothing happens to them.

I think this is much ado about nothing. I mean so what? I bet you the cashier probably could care less.

I wouldn't say that's the meanest mother ever.

I think the mom overreacted. She could have given them a stern verbal rebuke/ warning: that if they weren't polite and mannerly the way she wanted THEN there would be no more ice cream for a while.

How do you know that she didn't already do this the time before?

Do you think that maybe this is a way of enforcing (or backing up) what she had said would happen from the past?

That was my thought. Maybe the [S]brats[/S] sweet kids have done this time and time again.

Seems a bit over the top, but if that's her way on making a point then so be it.

I agree. I don't think the cashier probably cares if the kids looked at her or not. It's such a non story. I mean kids didn't look at somebody. So what?

Yeah really! The cashier is probably just happy if people aren't complaining and kids acting wild! Also it doesn't state how old the children were. If they were really young, they are excited about eating their ice cream. They didn't think about being polite or rude or whatever!

If that had happened when my sons were little , I would have said to them "What do you say" ?And they would say "Oh yeah, Thank you" .Or I'd just tell them "Say thank you to the lady"! knowing they were excited about the ice cream and didn't mean to act ill mannered! I wouldn't have thought it was a big deal. I certainly wouldn't have thrown out the ice cream! Wasting food and it is being mean!

Same with My Mom with me and my siblings when we were little, she would have handled it like I would have I'm sure!

It depends how many times she told them in the past to say thank you.

It does say their age: 8,7, and 5.
