LOS ANGELES, CA (NEWSPLEX) -- Famed writer and producer Earl Hamner Jr., has died. Hamner was the real 'John Boy' in the TV show The Waltons, based on his book Spencer's Mountain. He grew up in Schuyler, in Nelson County, where both the book and TV show took place. The Waltons ran for nine seasons, from 1972 to 1981. According to the director and producer of his recent documentary, Ray Castro, Hamner was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, which rapidly progressed up until his death. Hamner died with his family by his side, listening to John Denver's collection, his favorite music. Hamner was 92 years old. |

Wow. This has just been a bad day.
Watching the Waltons was one of my great childhood memories. It was my Mom's favorite show.

Another legend gone.
The Waltons will always be one of my favorite television shows. Also the movie Spencer's Mountain, and the book it's based on are both excellent. |

I own most of "The Waltons" on DVD and its the TV on DVD equivalent of comfort food. When the world gets too crazy or stressful I watch an episode or two of "The Waltons" and I feel much better. Thank-you Earl Hamner. And rest in peace.
