"Zootopia" at #1 for 3rd Weekend

Zootopia Scores Disney Animation's Largest Opening Ever

Audiences flocked to see Disney's Zootopia as it scored Walt Disney Animation Studios' largest three-day opening ever.

Meanwhile the weekend's other two new wide releases, London Has Fallen and Tina Fey's war comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, took second and fourth position respectively while Deadpool reached a milestone achievement.







Zootopia took in an estimated $73.7 million this weekend from 3,827 theaters ($19,258 PTA), which tops the previous March animated opening record set by The Lorax ($70.2m) and makes it the ninth largest animated opening ever.

It also gives Disney four of the top three slots on the March chart, a worthy achievement though all three remain a long way from the $152.5 million opening of The Hunger Games back in 2012.

In IMAX the film brought in $5.2 million from 366 screens, the second best animated IMAX opening behind only Toy Story 3's $8.4 million.




To go along with Zootopia's opening, the film maintains a 98% score on RottenTomatoes and received an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. All of which bodes very well for its hold over the coming weeks as the next wide release animated feature isn't until Ratchet & Clank on April 29.

In addition to the film's strong domestic performance, Zootopia played well in its fourth weekend in international release where its cume has grown to $158.8 million, giving it a $232.5 million global cume to date.

New territories this weekend included China ($24m), Russia ($7.9m) and Germany ($6.2m).







Coming in second, London Has Fallen performed just as expected, bringing in $21.7 million to go along with an "A-" CinemaScore. London's predecessor, Olympus Has Fallen, also scored an "A-" CinemaScore, though it did fair better with the critics, which will make London's run one to keep an eye on.

Olympus enjoyed a 3.25 multiplier, turning its $30.3 million opening into an overall $98.9 million domestic run. Can London follow the same course and finish around $70 million domestically, or will it be play similar to White House Down and finish around $60-62 million?







Coming in fourth is Paramount's Whiskey Tango Foxtrot with an estimated $7.6 million from 2,374 theaters and a "B" CinemaScore. Budgeted at $35 million, this is well below the $10-12 million the studio was hoping for, but just a shade below Mojo's $8 million projection.

Looking ahead, depending on how it holds over next weekend, a domestic run around $18-20 million appears to be where it's heading. The film played to an audience that was 89% over the age of 25 and broken down 44% male vs 56% female.







In other news, Deadpool became only the third R-rated movie to ever cross the $300 million mark as it brought in an estimated $16.4 million this weekend bringing its overall cume to $311.1 million.

After passing Man of Steel during the week to become the fourth highest grossing superhero origin feature of all-time, it is now only $7.3 million behind Iron Man for third place on the same chart.







Looking at last weekend's new releases, Eddie the Eagle held on just fine with a 49% drop and estimated $3.1 million weekend.

Both Gods of Egypt and Triple 9 dropped over 60% with estimated $3.5 million and $2.1 million weekends respectively.







Following last weekend's Oscars, Best Picture winner Spotlight added over 500 theaters and brought in an estimated $1.8 million for a 149% increase compared to last weekend. An impressive result considering the film is already available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Its theatrical cume now climbs to $41.6 million, currently making it the second lowest grossing Best Picture winner in the last 38 years, right behind last year's winner Birdman.







In limited release, Fox's The Other Side of the Door played similarly to the studio's release of The Pyramid in 2014. The horror feature opened in 546 theaters and brought in an estimated $1.2 million.

Broad Green released Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups into four theaters where the film brought in an estimated $56,688, for a $14,172 per theater average. No exact word yet on just how wide Broad Green intends to take this one over the long run, but it will be expanding over the coming weeks.

10 Cloverfield Lane Tops Newcomers While Zootopia Crosses $400 Million Worldwide

Disney's Zootopia dominated once again this weekend, bringing in an estimated $50 million in its sophomore session, pushing the film over $140 million domestically in its first ten days of release.

Leading the weekend's four new wide releases is 10 Cloverfield Lane with a strong opening weekend performance while The Perfect Match, The Young Messiah and The Brothers Grimsby settled in slots six through eight in the weekend top ten.







Dropping only 33.4%, Zootopia is the #1 film for the second weekend in a row as its domestic cume has now climbed to $142.6 million.

Internationally the animated feature took in an additional $83.1 million, which is actually up 25% from last weekend. The jump is largely due to the estimated $56.5 million it brought in this weekend in China, an increase of a whopping 139% as its global cume now stands at $431.3 million.







As far as the weekend's new releases are concerned, 10 Cloverfield Lane entered its opening weekend with incredibly strong reviews. The film got off to a great start with $1.8 million in Thursday previews and ended the weekend with an estimated $25.2 million.

Scoring a "B-" CinemaScore, it played to an audience that was 61% male vs 39% female and 68% of the audience was over the age of 25. In addition to its domestic opening, it also brought in an estimated $1.5 million from six international territories, most of which came from Australia where it brought in an estimated $1 million.

10 Cloverfield Lane's opening is similar to that of M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit last September, which opened with $25.4 million on its way to a solid $65.2 million domestic run.







We go down to sixth position for the weekend's next new wide release, Lionsgate and Codeblack's The Perfect Match, which brought in an estimated $4.1 million from 925 theaters.

It's a decent enough opening, though the smallest of director Bille Woodruff's career as it wasn't able to over perform as Mojo's forecasts thought it might. However, it did manage to top the weekend's next two wide releases, both of which were in significantly more theaters.

As a matter of fact, when it comes to theater counts for these three films, the fewer the better.







First to Focus' The Young Messiah, which finished seventh with an estimated $3.4 million from 1,761 theaters.

As far as faith-based features go, they can't all strike gold, and the timing of this one certainly didn't seem to help it.



Sony's Risen did decent business a few weeks ago and the studio is on the verge of having another hit on their hands next week with Miracles from Heaven, but Young Messiah simply wasn't able to attract a large portion of that audience.

For those that did make it to the theaters this weekend to see it, they liked what they saw as it scored an "A-" CinemaScore. The film played to an audience that was 56% female vs. 44% male and 86% of overall attendees were 25 years or older.







The true flop of the weekend is Sony's The Brothers Grimsby. The Sacha Baron Cohen comedy scored a wimpy $3.2 million from 2,235 theaters.

The film, which has been playing overseas for a couple weeks now, opened in 13 new international markets this weekend, including Russia and Germany, and grossed another $3.2 million, bringing its international cume to an estimated $11.2 million.







Limited releases this weekend saw Bleecker Street's drone drama Eye in the Sky win the per theater crown taking in an estimated $117,050 from five theaters for an average of $23,410 per theater.

Roadside's Hello, My Name is Doris, however, is hot on its heels with an estimated $85,240 from four theaters for a $21,310 per theater average.

IFC's City of Gold brought in an estimated $64,000 from four theaters and A24 began the limited release of Remember starring Christopher Plummer in two theaters where it brought in an estimated $20,000.







Elsewhere in the top ten, Deadpool brought in another $10.8 million as its cume has now grown to an impressive $328 million domestically.

It has now grossed more domestically than 2008's Iron Man ($318.4m) and is just $5.1 million away from passing Guardians of the Galaxy ($333.1m).

Internationally the film added another $11.3 million this weekend as its global cume has now climbed over $708 million.







Finally, Spectre is now only $45,499 shy of $200 million as it brought in an estimated $47,000 this weekend from 16 theaters, several of which

Sony reports were drive-in theaters that are showing good returns this weekend.

Allegiant Opens Short of $30M, Zootopia Tops $200M and Bronze Bombs

It's another #1 finish for Disney's Zootopia as the animated hit crossed $200 million this weekend, topping all newcomers.

Coming in second was The Divergent Series: Allegiant, with an opening that was down over 44% from its predecessor, and in third was Sony's latest faith-based feature, Miracles from Heaven, which over-performed the studio's conservative expectations.

In all, the top twelve was down just a hair compared to the same weekend last year with a combined gross of $119 million, of which Zootopia accounted for nearly 32%.







Dropping only 25.9%, Zootopia took in an estimated $38 million this weekend, bringing its overall cume to $201.8 million domestically, the third highest domestic total for a Walt Disney Animation Studios title (not adjusted for inflation).

Additionally, it brought in another $64.8 million internationally, bringing its worldwide cume to $591.7 million, which places it just behind the $591.8 million Tangled brought in globally over the course of its entire run back in 2010.







In second, with an estimated $29 million, is Allegiant, the third and penultimate film in the Divergent franchise. This is a troubling drop when compared to the franchise's first two releases, both of which opened with over $52 million on the same weekend in 2014 and 2015.

Allegiant's opening marks a 46.8% drop when compared to the $54.6 million Divergent brought in back in 2014 as the franchise finds itself gasping for air ahead of the release of the franchise finale, Ascendant, in June 2017.



Lionsgate will have to hope Allegiant follows in the footsteps of Insurgent, which brought in $130 million domestically last year (down $20 million from Divergent), but out-performed the original release by $30 million internationally for a $297.3 million global haul.

Allegiant got a jump start internationally last weekend with $25.2 million and added to that total this weekend with another $22 million from 77 markets, bringing its current international total to $53.4 million.







Landing in third with an estimated $15 million is Sony and Affirm Films' Miracles from Heaven. The film opened on Wednesday and scored an impressive "A+" CinemaScore and has now tallied $18.5 million in its first five days.

The studio has high hopes, as it should, that strong word of mouth and the upcoming Easter weekend will serve the film well.







10 Cloverfield Lane performed as expected in its second weekend, dropping just under 50% with an estimated $12.5 million, and Deadpool rounded out the top five with an estimated $8 million as its cume has now climbed to over $340 million.

As a result, Deadpool is now the eighth highest grossing superhero movie domestically (not adjusted for inflation), passing both Guardians of the Galaxy ($333.1m) and Spider-Man 3 ($336.5m) this weekend.







Well outside the top ten, and outside the top twenty in fact, is where we find Sony Classics' R-rated comedy The Bronze. The studio released the film in 1,167 theaters in which it could only manage $421,434 for a paltry $361 per theater average. This ranks as the fourteenth worst opening for a wide release and ninth worst per theater average for a wide release of all-time.

From a per theater perspective, it was Warner Bros' limited release of Jeff Nichols' new film Midnight Special that took the weekend crown. Opening in only five theaters the film brought in an estimated $184,000 for a $36,800 per theater average.







Also opening in limited release, Magnolia's My Golden Days brought in $27,000 from three theaters and A24's Krisha brought in $10,250 from two theaters.

Fox International released two new features starting with Kapoor & Sons - Since 1921 which brought in $965,000 from 143 theaters and El Clan, which opened in three theaters with an estimated $12,500.







Elsewhere, The Revenant crossed $180 million domestically, London Has Fallen is now over $50 million and Daddy's Home is inching toward $150 million.

The Big Short passed $70 million and Spectre finally reached $200 million as it has worked the drive-in circuit the last couple of weeks.

The plush versions of Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps that I got in my Easter basket are exclusive to The Disney Store and they are very soft and huggable as well. But if you are looking for other Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde plushes Tomy also has a plush Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps as well as other Disney's Zootopia plush characters in both small and large versions
