Default My DVD Viewing of Cheers

I'm watching every episode of "Cheers" on DVD. While I've seen the first three seasons a few times in the past (I recorded them off of Nick at Nite), and I've seen many random episodes of the later seasons, this is my first time watching all the episodes and back to back. So I'm having fun observing this series.

I'm currently on disc 1 of season five.

I like the addition of Frasier in season three but he gets really funny in season four, after being left at the altar by Diane. But I enjoy seeing him slowly being integrated into the group. Nice to see someone who probably didn't have many friends in the past finally belong somewhere.

I miss Coach but Woody's a fine replacement. I remember when I was a kid, I didn't know that Woody wasn't in the whole series. I was surprised to find out he was a replacement.

I'm enjoying it but I kind of feel like it's a good thing Diane leaves the show after season five. It'll bring a new spark to the series besides the tired (but still entertaining) relationship of Sam and Diane.

Oh and also, I don't know what they were thinking giving Nick Tortelli a spin-off. I always cringe when he comes on the screen. I can't imagine watching a whole show about him.

I'll add more random thoughts about the show when I think to.

I feel this way about most of Carla's family, but yeah, especially Nick and Lo-retta.
Yes, that's true. In the few episodes of "Frasier" I've seen (which are the ones where Cheers characters guest starred), they all bring that up to Frasier and Niles, too.

I didn't realize it until a couple days ago that Loretta was played by Jean Kasem, who was married to Casey Kasem and who kept his family away from him as he was dying. So I don't think I like her on a personal level. Of course it's probably best to not think about the actor behind the character.

I'm on disc 3 of season six. I miss Diane a little but they did such a great job of replacing her, that I don't find myself thinking about her absence like I do with other characters from other shows.

Also watching all of these episodes in a row has got me thinking about the people in the photographs during the opening credits. Who are those people? lol

Frasier is turning into my favorite character and I've seen very little of his spin-off series (even though I own all 11 seasons on DVD). I don't know if I'm gonna have another 11 season run in me after this (so soon anyways), especially one with no cast changes. In my case, the cast changes in "Cheers" helps to keep the long-running show fresh.

I just binge-watched all seven seasons of Growing Pains a couple months ago and while I was enjoying myself in the beginning, during the fifth season, I was getting tired of the show. I pretty much struggled to finish because I was so deep in, I knew I had to see it through. That's not to say I didn't enjoy any of the later years episodes but it just wasn't a fun experience anymore.

However, Cheers is a different story. I'm in the middle of season eight and the show is still entertaining me and I'm enjoying watching it. The big cast change of Diane leaving and Rebecca coming didn't hurt the show one bit, in my opinion. In many ways, it made it better (at least for later years viewing, the golden years to me is still the Diane era).

Just wanted to update that I'm still watching the show and liking it.

I just finished watching all 11 seasons. It's a wonderful series. I'm in the camp who likes both the Diane years AND the Rebecca years. I don't have a preference.

I can't believe I just watched 275 episodes and didn't get bored once. Usually when I binge-watch a series, at some point I get a little tired of the show and either quit watching or push through to the end (Growing Pains being my most recent example).

I may or may not go right into "Frasier", which I have only seen a handful of episodes. So that's basically a new show to me. I only question watching it because it's also an 11 season series and I don't know if I'm up for another long one like that right away, especially one without cast changes (I'm in the minority, I like cast changes in a show).

Speaking of Frasier, my favorite friendship in Cheers has to be that between Sam and Frasier. It seems like an unlikely match at first, seeing as they both were in love with Diane but she left and they remained together, lol.

Also, Cheers has one of the best final seasons of any show. They brought back previous guest characters such as Nick and Loretta Tortelli, Robin Colcord, Andy Andy in a funny cameo, Harry the Hat (who was able to best Gary) and of course the return of Diane Chambers for the finale. I also really got into the drama that was the breakup of Frasier and Lilith. I had really gotten to like them as a couple over the seasons and felt bad for Frasier when she left him. In fact, I really missed Lilith during that year. I think she appeared in only four episodes.

Okay that's it for now. If I have any other thoughts about the show I'll let you know.

I hate what the writers did to Lilith having her cheat on Frasier and leave him like that.

You know, I thought the same thing!
