I liked her better on MTM as well.
On Rhoda she was okay, but sometimes a bit too harsh. It seemed to me that Brenda was the lovable one on that show, the one that you felt for more. And Ida (Nancy Walker) was really the scene stealer. That pretty much left Rhoda to be the rational (AKA boring) one. On MTM she was more interesting. And yes... the friendship with Mary was the best!

I think Valerie Harper was great on both series. But of course her role was much smaller on MTM, because much of the show was focused on the Mary's life at the News Room. However, we got to see a little more of Valerie Harper's acting talent in Rhoda. She went through everything from marriage to divorce, and at the same time dealing with her mother, sister and the ever annoying "Carlton the Doorman".
Mary may have been able to turn the world on with her smile, but in my humble opinion, Valerie had a little more fire and passion. That passion was best showcased on Rhoda. |
