ok, a couple of questions for research, if someone can help me out. i'm writing a paper on daria and the simpsons and i need to find out some background on animated shows.
1. was the flintstones the first animated family sitcom? if so, when did it start? if not, what was the first one? 2. other than the obvious simpsons, etc... what have been the most popular animated family sitcoms for the last 20-30 years? if anyone can answer these, it'd be great. thanks!!

I'm not sure if it was the FIRST or not. I do know, however, that it was the first prime-time television show that had a husband and wife in bed together (ewwww, scandelous)...
Family Animated shows?? * Jetsons * Simpsons * The Addams Family (I think it was made into a cartoon also) * The Smurfs (Hey, there was Papa...) Hope this helps... |

I think Hanna Barbera also did a family sitcom in the late 60's or early 70's called "Wait Till Your Father gets Home."

"Flintsones" (1960-1966) was the first animated progam ever scheduled in prime time. Although the show was loosly based on "The Honeymooners," the show was very reminicent of many "family" style sitocoms at the time.
Probably the next animated program that was more sitcom than cartoon was (JethroSimpson nailed it) "Wait Til Your Father Gets Home) 1972-1974. This show was loosly based on "All In The Family," and it's content often reflected the more progressive content of sitcoms of the 70's ("Wait Till" featured a hippie son, a sexually liberated daughter, jokes about politics, like "All In The Family.") Prime time animation experienced a major dry spell until the Simpsons. Since then, the only show I can think that is in the same "family" style is FOX's "Family Guy." But personally I think Simpsons and Family guy are to traditional family sitcoms the same way The Osbournes are to tradtional families. Hope some of this helps. Any more questions, fire away! |
