Elmo and His Friends - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

In my last thread, I wrote about how different the world is from the way that it was when shows like "Gimme a Break!" were on prime time. I then explained how it seems that people who grew up with shows like "Gimme a Break!" hate the way that the world has become in the past could of decades. They tend to scapegoat their problems onto Reality TV and Elmo from "Sesame Street". The main thing that gave me the idea for this is the fact that a Reality TV show is now on at the time when syndicated episodes of "Gimme a Break!" were once shown. Well, now I would like to give you an idea about what I am on about from another perspective.

The people who were teenagers when "Gimme a Break!" was popular were little children when "Sesame Street" was new. Back then "Sesame Street" was an entirely different show than it is now. Nobody on "Sesame Street" now acts like the type of person who would play stick ball in the street and drink egg creams made by a middle aged Jew! The characters act almost like middle class people from the suburbs. By the way, when "Gimme a Break!" first came out, we were still four years away from the time when the character Elmo was introduced. A lot of people who grew up with old school style "Sesame Street" will blame Elmo for why "Sesame Street" became the watered down show that it is now. I would say that he is right up there was Reality TV in terms of what people from Generation X like to blame their problems on!

One show that I enjoyed about as much as I enjoyed "Gimme a Break!" is "Friends". All three of the main female characters from "Friends" did about as good a job as Julie from "Gimme a Break!" in terms of making me drool! Well, towards the end of the series, the characters of Ross and Rachel had gotten together and had a daughter named Emma. When Emma was a few months old, Ross and Rachel both needed to return to their respective jobs and so they hired a man to take care of Emma during the day. The man who came to work for them was a very sensitive person who had teddy bear like qualities. To make a long story short, they had some issues with him and had to let him go. They felt very guilty about what needed to be done. Somebody who was there made a joke about how, to fire a man with qualities like his is like firing Elmo! Just another sign of the times! For Elmo to be joked about on a prime time show was a true indication that the world had already become quite a different place than it was when "Gimme a Break!" was on prime time!

I just watched the You Tube video that you uploaded for me. Very nice indeed! I guess if you were to put in a nutshell the point that I was trying to make through my last two threads is that, for the world to experience the Elmo Generation is just one more part of Social Darwinism. For better or for worse.

Why does this not belong on the "Gimme a Break!" page? It deals with differences between the way that the world was when shows like "Gimme a Break!" were on and the way that the world is now. Elmo from "Sesame Street" and Reality TV are very significant parts of the way that the world is now. I also compared the types of situations that took place on "Gimme a Break!" with situations from "Friends" which is another situation comedy. I do not understand your reasoning. Please explain.
