Glenn Frey, a founding member and guitarist of the Eagles, has died ... TMZ has learned.
Frey had been battling intestinal issues for months and had surgery in November. We're told in the last few days his condition took a turn for the worse.
Glenn co-wrote and sang most of the Eagles hits, including "Take It Easy," "Tequila Sunrise," "Lyin' Eyes," and "Heartache Tonight," to name a few. He also co-wrote "Hotel California" and "Desperado" with Don Henley and took home 6 Grammys with the band.
After the Eagles' 1980 breakup, Glenn launched a successful solo career, recording numerous hits ... most notably "The Heat Is On" and "You Belong to the City."
Glenn also got into acting, snagging a recurring role on "Miami Vice."
He reunited with the Eagles in '94 for their monster Hell Freezes Over tour and recorded music till the end, releasing what would be his fifth and final solo LP, "After Hours," in 2012.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer had been fighting intestinal issues for awhile but his condition relapsed before the holidays, forcing the Eagles to pull out of their Kennedy Center Honors appearance in December. At the time, the band said he needed major surgery that would require a lengthy recovery.

So sad to hear this. He had such a nice voice, loved his singing with the Eagles. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Glenn.

Glenn Frey, the guitarist and singer who was a founding member of the Eagles, died Monday in New York City, the band said in a statement. He was 67.

Frey died of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia, the band said.

“Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community and millions of fans worldwide,” the statement read.

The Eagles were to have been recognized with a 2015 Kennedy Center Honor in December, but in November the band requested that it be put off for a year, until “all four Eagles, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit can attend.”

Over the course of the group’s career, it has sold more than 120 albums worldwide and won six Grammy awards.

In a 2014 review of an Eagles concert at the Forum, Times music critic Randall Roberts summed up the band’s influence on pop culture during the 1970s and ’80s:

“The messages that the Eagles spread about California life were, after all, some of the most prominent of the era. Delivered over FM airwaves at the peak of terrestrial radio's power and ingrained into the minds of anyone living through the 1970s and '80s, the Eagles’ best songs captured a California settling into itself, more concerned with its valleys and hanging out than surf and sun…

“For better or worse,” he wrote, “the Eagles helped to further characterize the region in the cultural imagination.”

The Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Times critic Robert Hilburn wrote that it “was a moment of triumph for the band because it had been widely dismissed by much of the East Coast music establishment in the ‘70s for its laid-back Southern California country-rock style.

“But the group’s music eventually took on a harder edge and its lyrics explored a generation’s struggles to balance the innocence and idealism of the ‘60s against the creeping disillusionment of the ‘70s with a biting, literary edge.

The Eagles had some great hits in the 70's, their peak period during 1975-76 when they had 5 straight great chart hits. One Of These Nights, Lyin Eyes, Take It To The Limit, New Kid In Town, and Hotel California.

Glenn Frey's Eagles bandmate Don Henley has written a touching tribute to his friend, following the news of the guitarist's passing. "Glenn was the one who started it all," he wrote. "He was the spark plug, the man with the plan. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn't quit. He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven."

Frey died Monday due to "complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia," according to a statement from the Eagles. Henley wrote that the band members are still processing the death. "We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow," he wrote. "We brought our two-year History of the Eagles Tour to a triumphant close at the end of July and now he is gone.

"I'm not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet," he continued. "It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life."

Elsewhere in the statement, Henley marveled at how he, Frey and the other Eagles kept going over the years. "He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction," the drummer and vocalist wrote. "But the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved. We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the same dream: to make our mark in the music industry – and with perseverance, a deep love of music, our alliance with other great musicians and our manager, Irving Azoff, we built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed."

Henley also noted that Frey "loved his wife and kids more than anything" and signed off by addressing the guitarist and singer. "Rest in peace, my brother," Henley wrote. "You did what you set out to do, and then some."

Wow, this has been a terrible month. LONG time fan of the Eagles here, as far back as I can remember, honestly. He and Henley really did create something magic, like Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards, and others.

67 years old is WAY too young. RIP Glenn.

I wonder if Glenn Frey's death means that The Eagles will not be receiving a Kennedy Center Honor at all? I also imagine there being a requirement that a recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor must still be alive at the time he or she receives the honor. Either that, or I haven't heard about anyone receiving a Kennedy Center Honor posthumously.

Oh wow this is terribly sad. I'll miss him, I think Glenn Frey had a great singing voice and was a good songwriter. Most of my favorite songs by The Eagles have Glenn singing lead on them. I grew up in the 70s and 80s so I remember listening to them on the radio and then when The Eagles broke up I remember hearing lots of all the solo stuff on the radio from the band members. But Glenn Frey was always my favorite, probably because he's a Michigan native LOL. I liked a lot of his solo music too. I don't think when I was a kid I fully understood or appreciated a lot of The Eagles' songs but now I do. May he rest in peace.

Wow, this year so far is not turning out too well. First Bowie, now Glenn Frey.
I wasn't the hugest fan of the Eagles in the 70's, but in the mid-80's, Frey was everywhere with his songs on Miami Vice.

Not that I didn't like The Eagles, but I was more a fan of their more rocking stuff.

I had no idea he was sick. My mom has rheumatoid arthritis, so did my late grandfather, and it compromises your immune system. So if you catch any illnesses like bronchitis or pneumonia, there's a high chance it will kill you.

BTW, I always loved You Belong to the City. That song truly captures the 80's in a good way.
