Is it just me, or would this bother anyone else?

My mother's husband [stepfather] made fun of Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU). I attended and graduated from there. My mother's husband told my nephew & I things about SFASU. He made it sound like a "low quality college". He claimed that it was "barely above a junior college." I disagreed with what he said. He said that there "aren't any master degree programs there." There are 44 master programs and 3 doctorate programs. He said "the campus was small." It's not small. When I attended it was ranked the #1 teacher's college in TX.

He tried to make it sound as though almost anyone can get in, not true. I got in because my grades / high school GPA was a 3.795 & I was in the top 15% of my class. My SAT scores weren't that good. It's not an ivy college or anything, but it is a good university.The worst part about him putting down the college I went to was how it made me feel & what my 18-year-old nephew must think of me. My nephew just finished his first semester of college at a different university than I. I think that anyone that attends & graduates college should be proud of themselves. I don't think the college, university or junior college should be mocked. College isn't for everyone. What should matter is that I graduated. I shouldn't care what he thinks, but it really bothered me.

Jenny from all you've said about him through the years, I think it is he who has the issues. And it sounds like that he picks,picks, picks on you all the time. I had a family member that used to do that to me but luckily she's not in the family anymore and I haven't seen her in over 30 years. Just don't pay him any mind. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

You said it yourself, Jenny; you shouldn't worry about what this person thinks. He's obviously one of those people who has to compare his life with everyone else's, more than likely because he's incredibly insecure, so he tries to make everyone else feel that way so that HE can feel superior.

I seriously would avoid this person, because his kind does nothing but bring others down. Life's too short to associate with this type of person. I understand he's your mom's husband, but if she just sits there and lets him do it, she's being a bad mother. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

You're OK, you're smart and doing just fine, and should be very proud of your accomplishments and choices; you don't need validation from anyone.

I heard Casey Treat from The Christian Faith Center say once that some people have more degrees than a thermometer and they don't know anything. I think that applies here.

Thanks. Yes, he can be a jerk. He used to make fun of me by making blind jokes. I'm glad that's over. I agree, where someone goes to college shouldn't be mocked.

That's ok that you didn't go to college Bonnie. The sad thing is that some people make fun, and there is no excuse for anyone to be made fun of. There is nothing wrong with not having gone to college. I grew up being told by my mother that I would go to college. There were no "if's, and's or but's." My mother drilled that into my brother and I over the years. I can't imagine the things she would probably say to me if I had gone against what she said.

Making blind jokes!!!! That is just cruel !!!! If I were you, Jenny as best I could, I'd let what he says go in one ear and out the other!!! He sounds very mean spirited!!! I'd steer clear of him as much as possible, and if you must be around him, try not to listen to him!!!

He's such an idiot. Not only did you attend and graduate from a very good college, but you did it with practically no eyesight. Could that bald fool do that? No offense to anyone bald. He just pisses me off to no end.

I'm sorry Jenny, but I blame your mother for a lot of this. Why doesn't it bother her when he rags on you? I guess he takes his cues from her because she doesn't treat you all that great, neither does you sister or your brother and his wife. It's not fair. They should all be ashamed of themselves. You're a wonderful person with a great heart.

I'm here for you. I know it's not the same, but I look at you as my sister and the best friend I've ever had.

Jenny, I echo what everyone else has said. He sounds completely wretched and I think he may be jealous of your accomplishments. The next time he starts to pick on you, just remember, a lot of us here at SO are fond of you-and know how decent, kind and smart you are.

I appreciate you being there. My family certainly isn't. You're a great best friend and that means a lot that you think of me as a sister.

You're right, it was a good college. It's not Harvard or Rice, but I never pretended it was. I just remembered that one of Mike's [my brother] friends also attended SFASU. It was either Rob or Jay. I'll have to ask him. It would be nice to have another person to show Don [my mother's husband] went there. I'm sure Don wouldn't last in any college if he was blind folded in such a way that he couldn't take it off. I'd like to see how "easy" he would find it then. You're right Janice, he's an idiot. I wish my mother would back me up, but no. Between my mother, her husband, my brother, his wife and my sister, I'm like the family member who doesn't fit in. You know like with a puzzle piece. The piece that just won't fit for some reason.

No. All I did was ask my nephew Tyler who has just finished his first semester of college how it went. He attends a different college. When he mentioned that he was still waiting on a couple of the final grades, my mother's husband jumped in by saying it varies by colleges. He gave an example and just started belittling SFASU. He went on and on. I tried to interject a few times on what I knew to be true and not true. I finally had to get up from the table and walk away.
