Default TV Land disappointment...

What's up with TV Land recently?

Bear with me here, please...

1) Weekends devoted to Reba.

I don't get this. It's not that Reba is a bad show, because I don't think it is, but every Saturday, for the last few months, they've been running marathons. The thing is, Reba only has like 126 episodes, compared to say, Roseanne (222), King of Queens (207), Everybody Loves Raymond (210), Golden Girls (180) and other longer-running 1990s-00s era sitcoms that play on TVLand, so, you cycle through 'em really, really fast. Each weekend, TV Land runs 25 Reba episodes (between Saturday and Sunday marathons) - that's basically 20% of the entire series' run in just two days. It's ridiculous. In two weeks, you run through 40% of the series' run, which means repeat episodes are far more likely than any other TV Land show. I don't get it. I like the show but it's just crazy how it plays constantly on Saturday & Sunday.

2) Where's their holiday marathon?

Every year, TVLand (and Nick at Night) would run a marathon of most their shows - from the Nanny to Every Body Loves Raymond to Roseanne. This year? Bupkis. That's not to say there aren't Holiday themed episodes, there are, but they're limited to the typical weeknight airings of that show.

Generally, the weekend before Christmas is when TV Land liked to run its Christmas marathon, so, this weekend, and yet, Saturday & Sunday, is just normal programming - the Reba marathon (see above), Golden Girls, Raymond and King of Queens. The only hint of a holiday marathon is Wednesday/Thursday when they run Christmas episodes of Raymond and King of Queens - two shows that air in their typical time slot anyway.

No marathon. Nothing extensive.

3) Roseanne fading away.

What happened to Roseanne? It used to be a staple and now it's barely on anymore. It pretty much just airs early Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings - and only two or three episodes in that stretch. There's nothing on the weekends. Nothing on weekend nights ... and going back to the holiday themed episodes, no Roseanne Christmases. As you can take from my name, I'm a pretty big Roseanne fan, so, this is a disappointment. Fortunately, Logo still airs it a great deal...but I do miss it mixed in with other old TV Land shows.

Just disappointed and had to vent. Sorry.

Did they drop Bewitched too? I haven't seen it on the last few times I tuned in.

When I hear things like this about TV Land, a cable channel people shell out bucks for, it makes me love FREE channels like Antenna TV even more. Antenna's marathons always have excellent timing, and avoid overkill. When a beloved actor of one of their shows passes, they will often do tribute marathons. Like when Davey Jones of the Monkees passed, Antenna did a 29 hr marathon of the entire series.

Regarding crappy time slots and shows disappearing, I guess many vintage channels of guilty of that. Maybe I'm missing something, but if a show you like is on at a bad time, can't you just record it to your preferred media (tape or DVD) and then watch it at your convenience? When a vintage show I love comes on TV, I'll burn most or all to DVD, so that if it does get dropped, I have copies I can watch forever.

I believe so. I don't see it on there anymore. It airs on Logo, though.

TV Land is a dead station!

It's owned by Viacom and all they want to do is make money rather than have quality television! They weren't like that in the 80's or 90's, they knew what was good TV rather than "I think people will love these shows, so let's dump the other shows"!

This is why I feel so strongly about Antenna-it's free and has (IMO) wonderful shows.

But no station is perfect, but some, once you weigh all the pros and cons, are still terrific-at least in comparison.

Urgh! That's what I thought. I don't get Logo so it's back to my DVDs for me. I like watching DVDs, but it was nice seeing Bewitched on TV again for awhile. I thought TV Land was trying to be more retro again.

Bewitched is STILL on TVLand, just only showing weekdays 5PM hour. And it can still be shown on Antenna TV.

Also I notice that TVLand will air the movie Hugo on Fri Dec 25 9AM-12PM and 8PM-11PM; just one day after Nick at Nite will air the same movie Thurs Dec 24 8PM-11PM!

Hugo's runtime is 2:06. Does that mean 54 minutes of commercials?

They did have the Merrython. I didn't watch it but it seemed like the same shows you have seen were on. Just a half-assed attempt by them.
Yes, Reba is on wayyy to much and Roseanne is hardly on. I wish somebody would buy TVLand and reboot it.

The problem is anything 15-20 years old these days is now old and can be considered classic. We now have to cater to Millenials and their nostalgia. The thing is TV sucked in the 90s and 00s just as much as it does today. Sadly the 60s 70s and 80s stuff is being relegated to the nursing home demographics. When the Baby Boomers die out we'll probably never see the actual good Tv again. People in 20 years will be getting nostalgic about 2 Broke Girls. F***.

I'm one of those Millennials that grew-up on shows from the 60's and 70's.

I wonder how many Millennials like the stuff their parents liked?

I couldn't agree more. However, I believe the sitcom died around 1980 and has never really bounced back.

TV was never better than it was in the 1970s, and probably never will be again. All we can do is just enjoy what was made and get frustrated over the fact that TV couldn't match the quality in any other decade.

If people ever get nostalgic about 2 Broke Girls....OMG! That is simply the worst show....the writing is horrible the acting is over-the-top high school talent show time.

I have a good friend who is an actor here in LA. He gets sent out on auditions for sitcom guest star roles. He says he just can't understand what happened to the writing, why things are so bad. So, I asked him, when you audition, are the show's writers in the room? He said sometimes. I said, "So, describe to me the average comedy writer on sitcoms today. Who are they?" Overwhelming, most of them are fresh out of college, early 20s, grew up thinking "Saved By The Bell" was masterpiece comedy.

THAT explains the situation of comedies today......
