Netflix Renews "Making a Murderer" for 2nd Season
Netflix Announces New True Crime Documentary Series
by Liz Raftery Nov 9, 2015 Netflix is getting into the true crime game. On Monday, the streaming service announced its latest original show: the docuseries "Making a Murderer", which is being billed as "the most compelling American crime story you've never heard of." Set to premiere in December, the 10-part series chronicles the story of Steven Avery, who was wrongly convicted of assault and was subsequently awarded millions of dollars based on the way his case was handled. But at the same time his assault case was prompting reforms to the criminal justice system, he became the prime suspect in a horrific second crime. Directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, who were inspired by a 2005 newspaper article, present the errors that were committed in Avery's first case and examine whether the justice system reforms have actually created a more reliable conviction process. "Making a Murderer" premieres on December 18 for Netflix subscribers. http://www.tvguide.com/news/netflix-...king-murderer/ |

This looks great! No doubt the green light was given due to the success of Serial (not to mention the hundreds of hours of true crime programming I myself have watched on Netflix
). I'm so glad that Netflix is recognizing that there's an audience for this kind of quality programming.

Anonymous Wants To Help Exonerate "Making a Murderer's" Steven Avery
by Megan Vick Dec 29, 2015 The hacker group Anonymous says it has evidence that could exonerate Steven Avery, the subject of Netflix's true-crime documentary "Making a Murderer". Using the new Twitter account OPAveryDassey, the group promised to release evidence on Tuesday that shows that two Manitowoc County, Wisc., police officers, Sgt. Andrew Colborn and Lt. James Lenk, were conspiring in the case against Avery and his cousin Brendan Dassey. "Making a Murderer" chronicles Avery and Dassey's convictions for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Halbach was last seen taking photos of a car on Avery's property. Lenk and Colborn were also directly involved in wrongfully sending Avery to prison for 18 years in 1985 for the sexual assault and attempted murder of a female jogger. Anonymous gave police 48 hours to release phone records between Colborn and Lenk and an evidence list that would shed light on the officers' behavior at the time of the investigation. "This will be the Official #Anonymous Thread Releasing Documents Concerning #ManitowocCounty Corruption Emails and Collusion #MakingAMurderer — OPAVERYDASSEY (@OPAVERYDASSEY) December 28, 2015" "#ManitowocCounty You Have 48 Hours To Release The Phone Records Between James Lenk and Andrew Colborn Step To The Podium #MakingAMurderer — OPAVERYDASSEY (@OPAVERYDASSEY) December 28, 2015" When the phone records weren't released by the police, Anonymous released Officer Lenk's personal email address to the public. "JLenk@Peoplepc.com #MakingAMurderer #Anonymous #GhostSec Its What we do...Its What we do.... AT&T Wisconsin ****ting Your Pants Yet Andrew?" At press time, Anonymous still had not released the phone records or emails they claim will exonerate Avery. "Making a Murderer" Renewed for Season 2
by Matt Webb Mitovich July 19, 2016 "Making a Murderer‘s" case is being reopened. Netflix announced on Tuesday that executive producers/directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos are in production on new episodes of the true crime series, which earlier this month netted a half-dozen Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series. The new installments will take viewers back inside the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery and co-defendant Brendan Dassey as their respective investigative and legal teams challenge their convictions and the State fights to have the convictions and life sentences upheld. In doing so, the new episodes will deliver exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, and Dassey’s legal team (led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin), as well as “intimate access to the families and characters close to the case.” In a statement, Ricciardi and Demos said of the pick-up, “We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series. The viewers’ interest and attention has ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold.” http://tvline.com/2016/07/19/making-...son-2-netflix/ |

Kinda like Serial, but more so. Serial left *some* of the story out. I felt like MAM left out way more information that was important to know if you wanted to truly be objective. |

I've flip-flopped over Avery's guilt or innocence, but can't overlook the fact that Kathleen Zeller, the top attorney in the country when it comes to overturning wrongful convictions, agreed to on take his case. She's known for thoroughly vetting her cases to make sure her clients are innocent before she agrees to take them on. She's best known for getting Ryan Ferguson out of prison and that's one case where there's zero doubt an innocent man was 100 % railroaded. Zellner claims to have uncovered new evidence which will apparently exonerate Avery, so I'll withhold judgment until I see where this goes.

I have no interest in MAM because of the criticism it got for leaving out pertinent information in order to promote the producer's point of view. However, it does sound strikingly similar to "The Thin Blue Line." For those who don't know, "The Thin Blue Line" was filmed in 1988 by the legendary Errol Morris and details how a guy was railroaded for a murdering a Dallas police officer in 1976. It truly was a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time and proves how eye-witness testimony is about as useful as tarot cards. The thing about this documentary is Morris doesn't come across as an advocate for one side or the other, but let's the viewer come to his own conclusion. The film itself caused such an outcry that it resulted in the suspect getting his death sentence overturned and released from prison. I believe it won numerous awards and is widely considered one of the best documentaries of all time.
I am sure most of you have seen it already, but it is on Netflix right now for those of you who have been living under a rock for the past 25 years. |

"Making a Murderer" Season 2 Likely Coming in Late 2017
by Chris Harris January 31, 2017 The second season of Netflix’s true crime docuseries "Making a Murderer" will likely begin before the end of 2017, a network spokeswoman confirms to PEOPLE. The spokeswoman says while she expects new episodes by year’s end, “we have no launch date set as of yet.” Currently, series creators Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi are in Wisconsin’s Manitowac County filming for the second season, Netflix Vice President Cindy Holland told USA Today. “Laura and Moira are shooting regularly and working on what the right story is to tell in the next set, so we’re deferring to them on when it will be ready,” Holland said. She added, “Very few people inside of Netflix actually know the details of what we’re getting because we’re wanting to keep it really under wraps and it is an ongoing case so we’re trying to be sensitive to that.” The original ten-episode run, which began airing in late 2015, examined the controversial case of Steven Avery, who was convicted for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Avery claims he was framed for Halbach’s murder as retribution for filing a $36 million lawsuit against Manitowac County and authorities for being wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and serving 18 years in prison before his 2003 exoneration. (Avery ultimately settled for $400,000.) The first 10 episodes focused on the murder trials and eventual convictions of Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, who was 16 years old when he confessed to the crime and implicated his uncle. However, both men have since maintained their innocence and insist Halbach’s real killer continues to walk free. Five months ago, a judge overturned the conviction of Dassey and ordered him freed — a decision the state has appealed. During the appeal, Dassey remains in prison. The judge said he had “significant doubts” about the reliability of Dassey’s confession, noting authorities promised the teen leniency in exchange for his cooperation during his interrogation. Dassey’s confession to law enforcement is perhaps the most debated aspect of "Making a Murderer". http://ew.com/tv/2017/01/31/making-m...-2017-netflix/ |

"Making a Murderer Part 2" Gets Premiere Date on Netflix; Details Revealed
by Denise Petski Sept. 25, 2018 Netflix has set October 19 for the global premiere of Emmy-winning docuseries "Making a Murderer Part 2". The anticipated second chapter continues to chronicle the unprecedented journey of Steven Avery from DNA exoneree and reformer to convicted murderer. Filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos return to the Midwest where they have exclusive access to Avery and his co-defendant and nephew Brendan Dassey, their families and the legal teams fighting for justice on their behalf. Over the course of 10 new episodes, "Making a Murderer Part 2" provides an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, exploring the emotional toll the process takes on all involved. Part 2 introduces viewers to Kathleen Zellner, Avery’s hard-charging post-conviction lawyer, in her fight to prove that Avery was wrongly convicted and win his freedom. Ricciardi and Demos follow Zellner as she tirelessly works the case and uncovers unexpected evidence about what may have happened to Teresa Halbach and about how and why the jury convicted Steven of her murder. Ricciardi and Demos also follow Dassey’s post-conviction lawyers, Laura Nirider and Steven Drizin with Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth, as they fight in federal court to prove their client’s confession was involuntary, a fight that could take Brendan’s case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. “Steven and Brendan, their families and their legal and investigative teams have once again graciously granted us access, giving us a window into the complex web of American criminal justice,” said executive producers, writers and directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos. “Building on Part 1, which documented the experience of the accused, in Part 2, we have chronicled the experience of the convicted and imprisoned, two men each serving life sentences for crimes they maintain they did not commit. We are thrilled to be able to share this new phase of the journey with viewers.” https://deadline.com/2018/09/making-...ix-1202470531/ |
