November 3, 1957
I know there is a lot going on today, but it wouldn't hurt to take a minute and celebrate Laika, the first dog in space. Laika, as stray dog found on the streets of Moscow, was launched into space on the Soviet Sputnik II satellite on November 3, 1957 Little was know about the possible effects of space flight -- and weightlessness -- and little Laika was chosen to go on a one-way flight into space to help us learn. Originally, the PR machine of the Soviet Union told the world that Laika had a painless journey, and was peacefully euthanized a week or so into the trip. But this was not so. Laika died an incredibly grizzly death! Fifty years later, after the break-up of the old Soviet Empire, records revealed that Lakia died horribly within hours of launch, and likely died from a combination of her own panic, and intense heat inside the tiny spacecraft. Whenever you think your having a bad day... think of little Laika! |

I came across this article and wondered what the Soviets thought of putting a live animal into space. The poor dog. Today there would be tons of outcry.
