Springfield College revokes Bill Cosby's honorary doctorate

The Springfield College Board of Trustees agreed on Sunday to revoke the honorary Doctor of Humanics degree conferred on comedian Bill Cosby in 2002.

The Springfield College faculty senate had already passed a resolution advocating the rescission of the degree in light of allegations by more than 40 women that Cosby had drugged and sexually assaulted them.

Cosby has acknowledged he obtained prescription drugs to give women before having sex with them, but has denied he raped the women. He has never faced criminal charges.

"I believe that, by his own admission, he has shown a lack of character and integrity that is inconsistent with our Humanics philosophy, which is the foundation of a Springfield College education," said Mary-Beth Cooper, Springfield College president. "I am in full support of this decision."

Earlier this month, Tufts University in Medford rescinded the honorary degree it bestowed upon Cosby in 2000, along with an award given in 2011 for excellence in children's media.

Fordham, Brown and Marquette universities rescinded his honorary degrees a month earlier, while the University of Massachusetts at Amherst formally severed its ties with Cosby last year.

The 78-year-old Shelburne resident earned a master's degree and doctorate of education from UMass.

Cosby faces three civil suits related to the allegations.
