did you like the episodes where it was just Mike & Gloria and no Archie and Edith? (I call those "The Mike & Gloria show")

No I liked the episodes were all 4 in. I would imagine that they had in the contract that they would have an episode or 2 a season off. The best episode I like from season 8 was Twos a Crowd with Mike and Archie. Also my oldest stepdaughter likes the episode when Mike hits a guy on the subway titled Mike The Pacifist season 7. Edith is not in that one.

To me it depended on the ep.!!!! I know All in the family is a classic and I used to love it. My Mom and Dad were really into it, and aloud me to watch it. Watching again, I don't like all the fighting and I think the way Edith was portrayed and treated in the first couple of seasons was really bad. It wasn't funny, it was mean!! It was like they were making her out to be mentally challenged or something!!! Than later seasons she got more intelligence! Still, sometimes I find the show funny, other times over the top with the fighting and bigotry!!! Didn't matter to me if Mike and Gloria were in the show or not, totally depended with me on the ep!

Gloria was kind of SPECIAL to be a grown woman. Crying like a idiot and whinning which made me hate her character

Gloria was good eye candy. She was the most like Archie. Edith at the very beginning talked back to Archie and said things about him that were comical. It seems like they made her more passive and naďve.

Gloria was a great character no doubt about it, but IT was Edith who touched me more than anyone else.

This question has been in the back of my mind for a while, and this thread is a good place to ask.

What is the story with Mike's family - mother, father etc?

I even went back a few threads to seeing if this was discussed, but didn't want to go back through all the threads.

I don't enjoy the Mike & Gloria only episodes.
It is Gloria especially that I don't care much for.
I seem to enjoy the episodes more that have a lot less of her.

Didn't they die when he was a kid and he mainly was raised by his Uncle Cass? The guy that was at their wedding? I'm not sure ,but I think that's what the story was supposed to be??

I always found it weird that Mike was supposed to be from Chicago! He had a very strong NY accent! What was the point any way, why couldn't he have just been from NY? Maybe because he was Polish and Chicago is known for having a large Polish population? IDK why but it really bugs me when a person on TV or the movies have an accent that is all wrong from where they are supposed to be from!

Thanks.
I'm not really a fan of this show but since I get the reruns regularly, I realized I didn't know anything about Mike's past.

Yes his mom and dad were killed in a car accident and he was raised by Uncle Cazimir Stivic played by Michael Conrad. Caz was in the 2 part Mike and Gloria s wedding in season 3. Cazimir is mentioned in Archie in The Cellar season 4. Archie find a bottle of Polish vodka and it was given to Mike and Gloria as a wedding present from Cazimir himself. Archie refers to him as that dumbbell from Chicago and then proceeds to get drunk.

And I love the way the Unc. handled Archie. (Epic writing from a progressive groundbreaking show 30 years ahead of its time.)

Yes he told Archie he would come back to visit him and then beat the hell out of him. Archie always ended up getting his foot put in his mouth. In season 4 Irene demolishes him at pool. Archie was downplaying her because she was a female. He got worried when he seen her with her own pool cue won in a tournament. Also George Bushmill in season 5. Archie saying that a mentally challenged young man could not do a job he does. George ends up working on a loading dock and putting in a blade that brilliant Archie had in backwards.

Yup. Archie had a real talent for putting his foot in his mouth.
