Default "The Hunter"

Is it just me or did anyone else find the episode "The Hunter" exteremly creepy? It seemed like an episode of "Criminal Minds" or a bad horror flick. It was just an odd episode that doesn't quite fit in, to me.

Yes it was unfit for Gilligans Island. Too, as you said, creepy for a show like GI. GI was supposed to be funny and there was nothing funny about this episode. I often wonder why Shwartz even wrote it.

Would have been fair if Gilligan grabbed the rifle and pointed it at Kincaid, but we know Gilligan wasn't like that. Infact none of the castaways would have done something that cold

This episode was based on the story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell . It's out of character for Gilligan's Island, but most TV shows have a few episodes that completely miss the mark .

THREE thread on this unusal, gripping episode! Sherwood Schwartz didn't write it, Ben Gershman and ?Freedman (who wrote "Brady''s 1973 Marca at the Ice cream store episode0 wrote this one. Schwartz, ironically, wrote only a few episodes, and they were in the 1st season only. This is a 3rd season one..

A lot of shows in the 1960s, sitcoms, even kid shows like "Lost in Space", all took the trope of "hunting the most dangerous sport".

There was a funny exchange between Kincaid and Mr Howell about various hunts. It's not PC but the timing of the punchline is what made it work. And it's in a darker episode, if not the darkest given the actual plot.

I need to rewatch the episode as I vaguely recall liking it with Gilligan bumbling around and being the reason that Kincaid would go nuts after reaching mainland. But in real life the hunter would kill all 7 of them and nobody would ever know!

But this is, after all, the same decade that bestowed upon the land "Hogan's Heroes". It's a spoof of Nazi Germany, but it was never funny either. For several reasons.

I haven't seen this episode in a long time but I remember a lot of tense, laugh track-less scenes. It's really striking when a show designed for laughs every other line has this completely humorless and dead-serious character show up.

It was very strange but I don't blame the producers for trying something different. I like when shows experiment with unusual episodes once in a while. You get to see different sides to the characters.

Exactly! I remember when I first saw it as a kid(in reruns) I definitely found it creepy. Even as an adult it's unsettling.

They do add humorous parts though like Gilligan falling in the water tub, dragging Kinkaid in the water, & Kinkaid shooting water out of his rifle instead of bullets! Then at the end there's the entire Gilligan in the moving tree bit!

The irony is the actor who played Kinkaid, Rory Calhoun, was an ex-con who actually served time in jail!!

I like the episode, I'm a fan of The Most Dangerous game and enjoy the episodes of shows that recreate it.

It does have a rather "darker" feel to it, but it was on Gilligan's Island, and I still liked it.

For some reason I remember Ginger offering (more or less) a trade of (putting it politely) affection to Kincade but he rebuffs the offer ... and now that scene is no longer ....

maybe I recall incorrectly but that's what I remember

Yes she did but something happened that distracted Kinkaid.

The Hunter is one of the few episodes that still sends a chill up my spine. Jonathan Kincaid is in my opinion, the scariest character to ever appear in the show's history. Even scarier than the headhunters and mad scientists that the group previously encountered over the years. Could be a combination of Rory Calhoun's chilling performance and seeing Calhoun in Motel Hell.

I bet that if Kincaid succeeded in killing Gilligan, he would've murdered all of the other castaways afterwards. In a way, Gilligan saved all his friends from certain doom.
