I've seen it as TV-PG a lot, but I saw an intro to the 2nd Season and it looked like this...
I know most of this show is TV-PG, but what were the TV-14 eps? |

According to my experiences, you are correct that most of the episodes are TV-PG. I do not remember any that were TV-14. I think that it will be interesting to see whether anyone on this board remembers any that are like that. |

It could of just been a mistake. I remember back in the late 90's when USA was airing The Facts of Life, there was one time when the TV-14 rating showed up during the opening credits. Then after the commercial break the TV-PG rating showed up.

"Gimme a Break!" is one of a bunch of shows that I have watched in which different episodes have different ratings. Like for instance, some of the "Facts of Life" episodes are rated G while others are PG. My guess would be that this is because some episodes delve more into controversial topics like sex and religion than others. "Mad About You" is another show in which some of the episodes are G and some are PG. The last example that I would like to offer now is the "Honeymooners". Because of how innocent a lot of the content in this show is, a good number of episodes are as low as G. Every once in a while, you will come upon one that is PG. Well, here in New Jersey, there is a local station that shows syndicated episodes every Sunday Night. The past two Sunday's featured episodes that were as high as TV-14! If anyone here is interested, I will be happy to kick around some theories as to why these two episodes were considered especially controversial. Tonight at 10:30, there will be an episode that is rated G. |

These shows come from a time in history when there were no TV ratings at all, and shows were pushing the boundaries of what they can get away with and attempting to make a point on touchy issues.
Enter the era of TV ratings and networks with re-runs on older shows, now needing to get rated. This is just a theory, but it's possible each section of each episode has to be rated. And there must be more than one individual assigned to the task of stamping a rating onto the segments. But do they have directives? If they do, how well were they followed? Did each person just rate based on what they recall vs. watching the segments, then deciding? All this is just my guessing. But when I think back to watching the show, I recall old school family values wrapped around sassy humor. Now that I can see the show again, with my adult eyes, I see that 'pushing the boundaries' was something this show liked to do. The chief's brother marries a hooker! Not only do we learn Katie was on birth control, but her late mom initiated it! Those examples are off the top of my head (along with the other daughter getting pregnant), and to me TVPG wouldn't be enough. I'd be saying TV14 on those. But were they? Is my thinking correct? It is after all just my perspective. IMO TVPG across the board, with some TV14 exceptions. I haven't re-watched the entire show yet. Rating are interesting though. Think about Jesus Christ Superstar. It's rated G... For All Audiences. It has a scene where hookers are gyrating their ass and crotch right up to the camera. Do you want your little ones seeing that? Or is it a case of "Think of the bigger picture. It's about Jesus"? Okay, I got off track. I shut-up now. |
