Default Schneider and his pass key...

I know that this subject has been brought up before, but I didn't really understand why Schneider was able to come in and out freely from the Romano's apt. I always thought that it seemed creepy that he would come in and out unannounced. He seemed like a pervert, I don't understand how he didn't get into trouble by coming in and out of tenant's apt without permission. If I lived there, I would have definately have turned him in.

This is probably the biggest talking point of the show. At this point you just have to accept it. Sort of like on Gilligan's Island that to assure rescue they didn't just kill and eat Gilligan.

Schneider was an excruciatingly, frustratingly, mind numbingly ANNOYING man! He was constantly letting himself into the Romano apartment with his pass key and he would never shut the hell up. He was always blabbering on and on about nonsense! I would have called the cops on him a long time ago. I really loathed Schneider. Nothing about him was endearing or funny to me. I truly do not know how Ann tolerated that man.
Schneider really pissed me off when he let himself and Ann into David's apartment while David was having an intimate evening with his girlfriend.
A few years later, I LOVED when Sam threw his pass key out the window!

David should have at least complained to the apartment owner and demanded for Schneider to get fired. That was definitely grounds for immediate termination. But I think I like your idea better with Schneider getting thrown out the window.

This show began airing in late 1975, a time when people weren't so uptight about everything like they are today. Schnieder using his pass key to enter tenants apartments was simply a humorous part of the show, and also as part of Schnieder's persona. Later on in the series, Sam tossed Schnieder's pass key out the window. That was in the 1980's, the time when people started getting uptight about everything.

I do agree Schnieder can be annoying, but he is harmless. He overuses his pass keys mostly because he's a nosy snoop who's curious to see what the tenants of the building are up to.

I think Ann and the girls accepted Schnieder as part of their family, and they usually didn't complain when he used his pass key to enter their apartment. Ann was a single woman living with her two daughters, Schnieder was sort of like a security guard, a male protector, checking in on them to make sure they're OK. He sure was protective of them, sometimes overprotective. But his intentions were good.

Was it ever mentioned if he did it with the whole building, or just our Apt. 402? I don't recall. It's mentioned above they busted in on David, but wasn't that for some reason they were freaking out with worry?

I always liked Schnieder. He was like part of their family.

I think there is an episode early in the series where Schnieder mentioned using his pass key to enter other apartments, not just Ann's.

The time they walked in on David, yea they were concerned about him and then found out he had a female visitor.

David had to break his date with Ann cause he said he had an important "business meeting" to go to!!! Than Schneider comes up to Ann's looking for David cause his car was blocking in another neighbor or something. Ann got worried and thought David suddenly got very sick or injured in his apt. and that is why his car was still there! Ann had Schneider open his door with his pass key!!! And you all know the rest!

He probably only really did it with the Romanos, because he was a lonely man and they adopted him as their "surrogate eccentric uncle".
