Happy Discovery Day! This is what I'd rename Columbus Day if I had it my way. Chris NEVER set foot in what would become the Continental US Leaf Erikson landed in northeast Canada, then made his way to New England. Another explorer, John Cabot, set foot in a spot in or near Chesapeake Bay in 1498. IMO this day should be set aside to ALL explorers, not just one. Just to name a few Henry Hudson, Danial Boone, Kit Carson, Lewis and Clark, Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong. These bold men were on a REAL trek, seeking to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new lifeforms and civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before!

This day should be set aside for them and countless others, not just for one man.

Regulus, I think you have a good idea!!! You are right!!! Columbus didn't land in the continental USA ,I think he actually landed in the Bahamas?

I say YAY to Discovery day!!! Give them all credit !

Oh yeah it is Canadian Thanksgiving day today!! Now do they celebrate like we do with turkey and pumpkin pie and all?

if I knew what day they celebrated it, I would celebrate Mexican Thanksgiving as well - any excuse for a turkey dinner is good enough for me!

I do agree...and Columbus does have some credit, but not all.

Like how President's Day not only dedicates George Washington or Abraham Lincoln...but all the presidents, even though after Washington and Lincoln, William Harry Harrison and Ronald Reagan were the other presidents born if February.

I've even heard that the Celts and Phoenicians may have discovered America before Leif Erickson!

from what I heard Canadians DO eat Turkey on their Thanksgiving, and their Holiday season begins the same weekend as ours.

There's a legend in Ireland about a group of monks who went on a journey across the Atlantic in the ninth century. From what they described in this tale they made accurate descriptions of the Faroe Islands, The Bahamas and Bermuda. Columbus got as far as the Bahamas, but for reasons Heaven only knows he decided to head south instead of continuing west.

I think he (Columbus) thought he discovered modern-day Indonesia so it was to him close enough!

Yeah he was sailing for India and that is why our Native American people are called "Indians" ,he thought he was still over there near India!!

I call the Indians that are indigenous American Indians. I call people from India Asian Indian. Better than Dot Indian or Bow Indian which I find offensive.

I still wonder if they should ditch Chief Wahoo for a more respectable American Indian like the 1920's logo or have a contest on what should we be renamed?

For the Redskins, they should go by the name of The Washington Braves since that was their original name when in Boston, but changed because it would confuse the baseball team as well.
