Sam Smith's "Writing's on the Wall" becomes 1st Bond Theme to Top U.K. Charts
Sam Smith's Spectre Song becomes First James Bond Theme to Top U.K. Charts
by Alex Ritman 10/5/15 Sam Smith’s new video for 'Writing’s on the Wall' -- the theme song for the new James Bond movie, Spectre -- has arrived. The video’s release coincides with Global James Bond Day, the anniversary of the theatrical release of the very first Bond film, 1962's Dr. No. The video was directed by Luke Monaghan and filmed in Rome, in the same locations that Spectre was shot. The video offers new glimpses from Spectre, including Union Jack-covered coffins and scenes featuring Daniel Craig, Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux. Sam Smith is dressed in a classy black suit as he sings the soaring ballad that is intermixed with scenes from the movie. The song, Smith's self-penned track for the upcoming 007 movie, has reached the top spot in the U.K. music charts, the singer's fifth No. 1 overall. Even 'Skyfall', which earned Adele an Oscar, only got to No. 2 in 2012, as did Duran Duran's 'A View to a Kill' in 1985. 'Writing's on the Wall' racked up combined physical and streaming sales of 70,000 copies, 13,000 ahead of its nearest rival, Justin Bieber's 'What Do You Mean?'. The achievement came amid mixed reviews for the song. While the likes of former Bond Roger Moore claimed that it was "very haunting and wonderfully orchestrated," others have criticized it for being too bland. The Guardian said it sounded "less like a Bond theme song than a latter-day pop ballad — the kind of thing that X Factor contestants have a crack at." http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...me-tops-829369 |

Easily the worst Bond theme to date. How this piece of dreck went to #1 in the UK while none of the others did is beyond me.

Well in the US A View To A Kill was the only James Bond theme to hit #1. That one is far better than this lame one. I did like Skyfall though, it reminded me a lot of Goldfinger. Live And Let Die is fantastic and was the only theme nominated for an Oscar until Skyfall. Why A View To A Kill wasn't nominated (it was for a Golden Globe)is a mystery, especially when you see the dreck nominated that year (a song from a Chorus Line was nominated and that bombed).
