Post forbidden sitcoms

When you were growing up where there any sitcoms that your parents would not allow you to watch?

I was born in 1977 and I remember that during the 80's my dad wouldn't allow me to watch Three's Company, Night Court, or The Golden Girls. Those rules seemed like a contradiction to me because he would let me stay in the room while he watched Dallas and LA Law.

Cool

My parents never really forbade me from watching any TV shows, unless it had a lot of violence and sex.

Wait a minute! You could watch those 3 shows? Melrose and Models had nothing but sex(especially Models INC. Knots wasn't that bad at all.

Growing up my parents never did tell me what I was allowed/not allowed to watch. But I do remember going to private school back in the 4th & 5th grade ( this was back in the late 1970s ) and was told by my teachers alout the "evils" of those rock& country shows like American Banstand, Soap Factory Disco, Pop goes the Country, Dolly Parton, Solid Gold, Wolfman Jack, Sha Na Na, even Hee Haw.
Was told that all those shows would "..send America straight to the fires of Hell". Looking back now I laugh at it.

I got kicked out of that school, well asked to leave when the headmaster found out what my mother did for a living. She sold tvs and radios.

I did have a good friend of mine whose dad ( for years ) would not allow him to watch anything he felt promoted the gay lifestyle.
Shows like Soap, Love Sydney, Dynasty were forbidden in that household as well as shows that featured actors he though were gay. Match Game for example was banned because his dad thought Charles Nelson Riley was a bad influence. Rip Taylor and Barbara Walters ( who he thought was a lesbian ) were two more. Why did my friend's dad do all this? Well it was because my friend's dad was gay himself and he used all this, banning certain shows and music to hide his true sexual pref.

I know many parents out there do control what shows their child watches. I respect that. If a child is 8 years old , no he/she should NOT be watching Queer as Folk or some other "adult" program, any good parent would see to that. But if a child is 12 or 13 and a parent still forbids certain shows, sorry but to me the parent is usually hiding something from the child. For example they ( the parent ) feels uneasy or simply embarrised about talking to their kids about sex, violence, and drugs. That CAN lead to problems.

We can say that the reason why kids are into sex earlier and do drugs is due to peer pressure, some of that of course is true> And its eay to blame tv/radio/music/movies why kids do these things too. But to me a large chunk of this goes back to the parents.
Its up to the parents to tell their kids about sex, drugs ect...not by hiding the "bad things of life" by forbidden certain shows, certain movies and radio stations ect...

I myself know many of girls who ended up having babies young and many kids who had drug problems at an early age because their parents were either scared or embarrised to tell them about these subjects ( which in turned made these kids to learn them from other sources, places where they would get the wrong information ).

I really believe if more parents and cildren would communicate better about these issues, do we really need tv ratings and coming soon radio ratings?
