Nine years have gone by... - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Since my decision to cancel my subscription to Pay-TV. It didn't happen in a moment, in 2004 I began wondering WHY I was PAYING for the "privilege" of watching commercial-infested programming (Especially when since it was an even-numbered year, and it seemed like every other commercial concerned an event that would happen in November of that year). Thanks to Hurricanes Charley, Francis and Jean I had three "Reprieves" from watching Pay TV, during which my mother gave me $100.00 to purchase movies we could watch while waiting for service to resume. It was at that time I realized that I enjoyed watching movies WITHOUT those annoying commercials.

Service was restored, and it was back to "normal" TV. I put up with the ads, but I could see the numbers of commercials shown was increasing in numbers. Also it seemed the prescription drug commercials were getting more risque. At first they dealt with aches and pains, but from there they were now showing ads for pills that dealt with "Bodily Functions". It seemed most of the other commercials presented their products in the most obnoxious manner possible.

Then on this day in 2006 the "last straw" occurred. I spotted an ad for "ED Pills" ON A KIDS SHOW!

THAT DID IT!

The days of Pay-TV in my house were numbered. The following week I flew to Pennsylvania to attend a convention of roller coaster enthusiasts (using a FREE airline ticket I procured on a previous trip).

When I returned I had a little over $300.00 left in spending money left over. I drove to a shopping center and RAIDED several DVD bargain bins. By the time I was finished I had purchesed a dozen COMPLETE TV series and over two dozen movies on DVD. And I was just getting warmed up. In the next three months I picked up several more TV Shows and Movies, and when Christmas came around the size of my collection had DOUBLED. At the rate of four hours each evening I calculated I had more than a year's worth of DVDs, after the new year began I "cut the cord".

And what did I do with the $65.00 I saved each month by NOT subscribing? What else? Use it to purchase EVEN MORE TV Shows and Movies, along with some old fashioned movie serials and some documentaries. Today my library of home videos stands as follows:

TV Shows: 867 (40,787 Episodes)

Movies: 2,544

Serials: 78 (1,201 Chapters)

Documentaries: 500 (Not counting those included as "Special Features" on TV Show and Movies)

I am set for the remainder of my life. From what little I've seen of "appointment TV (Both free and pay) I'm glad I did what I did. and get this, the price of DVDs has NEVER gone up, If I were to resume subscribing to a Pay-TV service the monthly fee would be more than TWICE of what I pay for videos. I could put up an antenna for OTA TV, but I don't, and I also have no need to subscribe to a "streaming" service (I do watch some programming from YouTube, and If I like what I see I'll purchase that program.

Wow, you have a lot of movies and tv shows. You are definitely saving money. I wish I could say my cable bill was $65. My cable/internet/phone bill is $158.82 a month. So expensive.

Nothing but rubbish on TV now,not worth watching @ all!!!!!!

Yep, all we are paying for is infomercials and trash. I would cancel in a second but mom wants her Hallmark Movie Channel and she watches the Dbacks. CenturyLink just raised our bill for the umpteenth time , so we are probably headed but to Cox.

I would cancel because there is crap on tv. I do like my sports though. And honestly, I watch more stuff on ME-TV, COZI, Hallmark and Antenna than I do anything else. It's like I'm paying for only a dozen channels that I really want.

I know what you mean. If the cable company would let you pick & pay for only the channels you want, it wouldn't be so bad. But you have to buy their packages with lot's of stuff you don't even want. And then it goes up in price each year.

From what I've seen and/or heard, the people most reluctant to "cut the cord" can be placed in one of the following categories:

1. New Junkies. These people are ADDICTED to the news, and want to be on top of anything that happens, regardless as to how depressing or political it is.

2. Sports Junkies. These people just cannot get enough sports. I've seen people who will have TV sets consisting of One LARGE Screen (60 inches or more) and three or more smaller TV sets on top and/or below the main screen. The smaller sets are set to different stations/networks, and when the event on the big screen goes to a commercial break, they'll relegate that channel to one of the smaller screens and replace it with one from the other sets.

3. Spouse/significant other is addicted to any other channel.

As for me if something BIG happens in the news, I'll hear about it on various boards (including this one), and if there's a sporting event I want to watch I'll WALK to a pub that's near where I live, and I'll purchase a beer or two while watching the event.
