MacKenzie in the the Retrospect episode - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

The flashback episode marked the return of MacKenzie after being missing a few episodes. She looked old in that episode and the haircut did not help matters. She looked older than Bonnie Franklin. It was hard to look at her like that but when she was gone her absence was felt. You can tell the episodes she was not in during the fifth season the rhythm of the show was lost.

Yeah, the series would have had a stronger, more fondly remembered 5-9 seasons if they would have had a healthy Mack to work with.
