TV Steven Tyler To Guest on "Nashville"

Steven Tyler Talks "Nashville" Guest Appearance, New Country Album
by Jessica Derschowitz
9/23/15

"Nashville" is adding a rock legend to its country sound when the drama returns for its fourth season Wednesday night. Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is making a guest appearance on the season premiere, sharing the stage with Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere).

The two sing a duet of Patsy Cline’s 'Crazy', a rendition that’s also available now on iTunes. And Tyler’s got country on his mind off-camera, too — the rocker has been working on a country album and released its first single, 'Love is Your Name', earlier this year.

Tyler responded to email questions from EW this week about his "Nashville" cameo, singing with Panettiere, and what country stars he’s listening to right now.

Tell us about your scenes in the "Nashville" premiere, and how does the performance you’re doing with Juliette fit in?

I can’t give too much away but Juliette has a starring role in the Patsy Cline biopic and I join her onstage for a duet of 'Crazy' during her concert.

How was 'Crazy' settled on for the song you sing for the show?

Juliette is playing Patsy in the biopic of her life so it only made sense that we would sing the most recognizable Patsy Cline song ever … besides which, I’m a good friend and fan of Willy Nelson’s.

How was Hayden Panettiere as a duet partner, both while filming the scene and recording the single?

Hayden is a peach. She’s a seasoned pro, from her success on NBC’s "Heroes" … she’s a true professional both while filming, recording and off set as well

Did you both sing live while shooting that performance scene? What was it like to film, and how does that differ from performing an actual concert?

Why lip sync when you can sing live? And yes — she is that good! We had to give the audience a performance. My favorite thing about filming is that I can yell, “CUT!” and have a do-over if I want. There are no cuts in rock n’ roll.

You’re working on a country album of your own. What are your favorite country artists to listen to right now?

I’m absolutely loving "Nashville" and listening to Eric Church, The Cadillac Three and mostly … the guys I’m cutting my new record with.

And about that new album … what can fans expect? When will it be released? Will there be any special guests?

This new album is the love of my life at the moment and I am taking my time making sure it is everything I have envisioned. I always have a few tricks up my sleeve so you never know who will pop up on the album with me.

How does this album compare to an Aerosmith record?

This album is, of course, more countrified than Aerosmith but I am going to do what feels right to me. I won’t be bringing out a banjo just to make a song sound a little more country. There are more parallels than ever right now between country and rock n’ roll.

Any plans for new Aerosmith music down the line?

Never say never. My muse has enough material to write songs for the rest of my life, but currently my album is my biggest focus.
