Eek While at a Thrift Store Today, This Question Was Asked By Another Customer....

Who's Elton John?

I was looking at DVD's & VHS while 2 girls who looked to be in their late teens or early 20's were browsing through the CD's. One of them picked up a copy of Elton John's greatest hits and asked the other Who's Elton John? I had to turn and walk away because I was trying to conceal my laughter. It's hard to believe that someone wouldn't know who Elton John is but considering her age I guess it's possible.

I knew about Elton John since 1988...well, a little bit. I was only a kid and I knew these musicians a little. It's sad that soon many of these musicians will fade away...

I remember when the joke about kids was that they would ask "Paul McCartney was in a group before Wings?"

I seriously doubt that kids today even know what "Wings" is.

At Ozzfest in 2006, I was bragging to a bunch of teenagers that I met Tony Iommi the year before at Ozzfest 2005. They asked "WHO??"

They started making jokes and at that point, I didn't think it was even worth the effort to explain who he was--at OZZFEST, of all places.

It happens. I don't think there's an entertainer who is on everyone's radar no matter how popular they are. My mom is 72 and I seriously doubt that she knows who Elton John is. I remember not long after Michael Jackson died, my friend was telling me about how he mentioned Michael Jackson to his neighbor and his neighbor said "Who is that?"

Kids today, nope. I was just showing my age, referencing an old joke.

I think there is one entertainer whose name would be recognized by almost anyone even though he's been dead for almost 40 years. I'm referring of course to Elvis!

I won't be surprised a teen or young adult will ask..."Who's Elvis? Is he that guy who works at the drug store"?

The generation gap is what I thought was funny about Taylor Swift bringing out Joan Baez at one of her concerts. I'm an 80s kid and I barely know Joan Baez.

Some people don't know and don't care though. When I was in college, I saw a sorority girl arranging some flyers with Audrey Hepburn on them. I said, "Oh, I like Audrey Hepburn too!" She said, "Who?" It turns out she had put Audrey on the flyers only because she liked her picture.

When I hear about stuff like this it makes me realize I'm no spring chicken. I was 14 when Elton John came out with Your Song, and I've been captivated by much of his music ever since.

He's very witty and a good actor too. I've seen him on Will & Grace and Saturday Night Live.

He was also in "Tommy" with his rendition of "Pinball Wizard".

I also heard he has poked fun at himself with his homosexuality, his biggest influence is Liberache. And as a Millenial...I know who Liberache is as well as Frank Sinatra!

Maybe the girl knows who Elton John is, and was BS'ing the other girl when she asked who he was.

Conversely, it wouldn't surprise me if she really doesn't know who Elton John is. Kids nowadays are totally oblivious to anything outside their generation.
