Silverman should have left this show on, instead of including it in the "rural purge". The ratings were still high...was it money?

They didn't call it the rural purge for nothing.
I think Green Acres was a way better show than The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction but after a few years the premise was wearing thin. |

I may be alone in this opinion, but I think Green Acres could have easily gone on for a seventh season and beyond. The sixth season was, IMO, nowhere near as bad as its reputation would suggest. The show had gradually moved away from one-joke humor and general silliness and evolved into something of pure insanity, hilariously executed.
I'll admit there appeared to be a drop in energy level the last two years, but I'm not sure it really mattered. The writing was still on par with, or often above, that of the early years, and all the actors were having as good a time as ever. There were plenty of fresh and imaginative stories from 1971, like "The Free Paint Job", "The Spot Remover", and "King Oliver I", which showed there remained ideas to be tapped in the endlessly loony world of Hooterville. I absolutely love every season of this show and Green Acres is my favorite series of all time. I guess my point is the later seasons deserve a second chance and re-evaluation. Again, these are just my thoughts. Anyone agree or disagree? |

^I agree. A 7th season would've been nice.

I agree! It is one of my top favorite shows of all time too, and I like all the seasons! An ep.I really liked from a later season was when Oliver wanted to go on a quiet ,romantic picnic with Lisa, and the whole town ended up coming too!

The treatment of this show on DVD has been outright horrible. They don't know a good thing when they have it. A complete series set would sell like hot cakes....and not Lisa's hot cakes lol.

^All of Paul Henning's shows have been severely mistreated on DVD. It's a shame.

Other than those pilot episodes they integrated into Green Acres towards the end, I thought the series was great all the way through. Although I like All in the Family, that show and others that came out around '71 started a trend away from the types of sitcoms that had been popular in years prior.
I would, of course, liked to have seen more seasons of Green Acres, but 6 years is a pretty good run. |
