Today's opening day for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, a Boston native, sang The Star Spangled Banner--great job. Great team introduction, especially for Pedro Martinez, Boston's star pitcher. The New England Patriots arrived on the field holding their Superbowl trophy while Springsteen's, It's a Beautiful Day, played loudly in the background. The entire Patriot's team tossed out the ceremonial first pitches to the Red Sox team. President Bush's pre-recorded message to all of our country's teams shown on the big-screen scoreboard was quite moving.
Really nice, touching opening day ceremony.

That's a lousy thing to say. My post was intended to create an upbeat discussion of how everyone's opening day went and not to criticize teams.

It sounds like a very enjoyable opening day for the Red Sox! Boston has always been one of the great sports towns in this country - Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, and of course, the Celtics. I've been to Fenway Park a couple of times - it's a great place to watch a ball game. I'd love to see them win the AL East over the Yankees!

I've always been a Philadelphia Phillies fan myself. They opened on the road today against Atlanta (a 7-2 loss). Friday will be their home opener against the Florida Marlins. They plan to retire Jim Bunning's # 14 in a pre-game ceremony. Bunning has always been one of the most popular players they've ever had (and Philadelphia fans are notorious for being tough to please!). Bunning was the first modern-era pitcher to win 100 games in both leagues, and pitch a no-hitter in both leagues. He pitched a perfect game against the Mets on Father's Day in 1964, and was the winning pitcher in the first game ever played in Veteran's Stadium (The Phils are moving to a new ballpark in 2004). Today, he's a Republican Senator representing Kentucky in the Senate. I had the pleasure of meeting him several years ago - he's a true gentleman, and a great athlete.

Well I'm sorry if I don't like the Red Sox. But the opening ceremony was good. Don't take things so seriously. Not everyone who lives in Massachusetts likes the Red Sox. Lighten up.

I was in school during the opening ceremonies, but my mom told me about them. It sounded so awesome!!! Well, pretty much everything about the Red Sox is! We all tried to talk our teacher into listening to the game on his radio, but he wouldn't allow it. LOL At least, the computer teacher let us check the score online.

I'm so excited! I'm going to a Sox game in April and then again in July to one at Yankee Stadium! This is going to be awesome! LOL Tickets at Fenway are so expensive!

If you want to bash sport's teams, start your own thread and do so. My thread was for a discussion of opening day ceremonies--not to hear about anyone that despises my home team. Yeah, that I take seriously.
Read my original post and read your reply--it's obvious to anyone with an IQ of room temperature that I was excited about the Red Sox--and just as obvious that you made that negative comment to rain on my parade.

Well I didn't mean to "rain on your parade". Well, I should have put my post in better words. What I should have said was....

"Well, even though I don't care too much for the Red Sox because I'm a Yankees fan, I still enjoyed the opening ceremony".

A Yankee fan--now that explains everything.

Perhaps I take criticism of the Red Sox too seriously. I honestly think it's just years and years of frustration and disappointment. That whole curse of the Bambino thing, always coming so close to the big prize, the Yankees kicking our asses year after year, it's making me nuts.

It's not easy being a Sox's fan.

ps--Both our teams lost today--Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens both had bad starts.

I know how you feel. Haven't won a Series since 1918... all of Springfield gets so mad when they don't make it

But yes, about yesterday, I can't believe the Yanks lost to Baltimore! And, Red Sox to Toronto! I wonder what happened with Martinez and Clemens...?

Friday's opening day sounds like it'll be a good time. Jim Bunning certainly sounds deserving of being honored, and it sounds to me like it's about time. He can't be a youngster anymore.
Thanks for the kind words about Boston teams. The Sox were recently purchased by a zillionairre for a whopping 700 million! Boston's holding its collective breath hoping this puts new life into the team. One of the problems with the Sox has been the reluctance to spend money. George Steinbrenner understands that you have to pay for talent, and his team has the championship seasons to show for it.
Just one World Series win in my lifetime--that's all I ask for--just one.

Even though I live in Massachusetts, I'm not in the mood for baseball. I'm watching the Celtics and the Bruins. However the opening ceremony was good.

I know how you feel Janlady! The Phils have only won it all once during my lifetime (1980). In fact, that's the only World Series they've ever won. Because of this, I have a lot of empathy for Red Sox fans, and for Cubs fans.
