Don't ask me why, but for some reason I found myself being reminded of this case while I was reading the Paul Whipkey thread this morning. I thought it might be an interesting case to share with my fellow posters.
To keep things brief, Dr. Shane Todd was an American engineer who died under what many believe to be suspicious circumstances while working for an employer based in Singapore. He was a highly educated young man, working in his area of expertise on a project that was being jointly developed by his employers in Singapore and a Chinese telecommunications company. Shortly into his term of employment, Todd started to feel uneasy about the nature of some of his assignments and apparently voiced his concerns repeatedly to his family during their many communications. His concerns apparently became so great, that Todd resigned his position, giving his employer 60 days notice. On June 24th 2012, less than ten days before he was scheduled to return home, Todd was found hanged to death in his Singapore apartment. According to investigators, five typewritten documents appearing to be suicide notes were found at the scene. His family believes he was murdered. The Singapore government has issued a finding of suicide. 48 Hours did a profile of the case entitled Spies, Lies, and Secrets. I've also included the links to a comprehensive article in the Financial Times and a website thoroughly maintained by the Todd family. Suicide or murder? I'd enjoy hearing my fellow posters thoughts on the case. http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/2/afbdd...44feabdc0.html http://www.justice4shanetodd.com |

I just pulled this from my collection and watched it. Murder.
It's interesting to note that the 48 hours episode shows a brief snippet of the Todds meeting with then Senator Max Baucus of Montana. Baucus is now...the U.S. Ambassador to China. Man, is that a good looking group of brothers or what? 4 sons, all impossibly good looking and athletic. I've never seen anything like it. But yeah, Singapore is bad news. That's where that young American guy got cained back in 93 or thereabouts, that was a big deal in the news for awhile. Not a place I ever care to visit. |
