Default Why was a male clown named Clarabell?

I wasn't born yet when the original Howdy Doody was on. But today on COZI TV , I happened to come upon the New Howdy Doody show from the 1970's! I don't remember this. I don't think I ever watched it in the 70's? Anyway out of curiousity I left it on and watched it. Kind of funny in a corny, silly way! But WHY was the clown who was a guy named Clarabell, a girls name? I was thinking Is that clown a girl? But I didn't think so, and I researched on line and Clarabell was definitely a guy, three different actors played him actually!

I don't know the answer to the question, but I also enjoyed watching The New Howdy Doody show of the 70s on Cozi TV. A lot of those jokes were very adult in nature and I bet quite a few went over the heads of kids at the time.

Howdy Doody was more entertaining than I ever thought. And the weird thing is, Howdy Doody really wasn't on the screen that much. So many other characters.

Lol

I'm certain you've seen my Parodies of Sponge Bob Square Pants and Barney and Friends.

I'm working on one for The Howdy Doody Show.

One of the lines I've done goes "Let's Give a Rowdy Cheer, 'cause Clarabell's a !

Yeah! It was kind of cool. I'll watch it again! Have you ever seen the original Howdy Doody from the 50's!

Maybe it was an early Bruce Jenner type thing. Mr. Doody was very progressive.

I think Clarabell would have been a more appropriate name for a cow.

Disney has already done it:

I wasn't alive in the 50s, but every day I wish I was so I can watch great shows like this one:

Howdy Doody

Can you believe some of those videos were from the 1940s? That is just incredible!

Now if you remember the color 1970s version, you might also have seen the "Happy Days" episode where Richie and Potsie show up on the set of "The Howdy Doody Show" so they can take a photo of Clarabell the Clown without his clown makeup. That was a great episode!

I watch the "New" series from 1976 to see Marilyn Arnone ("Marilyn Patch") as Happy Harmony, the Doodyville schoolteacher -- who in real life is now a professor at Syracuse University in New York!
