I was watching tonights episode that where Howard met Millie. Howard gets into a battle with one of Millie's ex boyfriend's. Maybe seeing Alan Melvin in the episode brought back to memory the episode where Fred Plummer threatens Barney. Andy took all routes to make sure Barney didn't get hurt, while in the Howard episode he didn't take too many routes. Basically, all he said was, "I've met a lot of men that acted just like him."

Can anybody else think of an episode that conflicted with an earlier episode, but Andy acted differently about the situation?

I can't think of any others, but I think Andy would stick his neck out to protect Barney, more so than he would Howard. Andy and Barney grew-up together and therefore had a tighter bond than anyone else in the series.

I was surprised to see Andy trying to move up the social ladder, pushing Opie ahead of him, on an episode where Opie makes friends with a rich kid. First he almost forces Opie to go to a summer camp that has a lot of well-to-do kids at it. He tells his son he;ll be making new frends. Then Aunt Bea gets the good china out and makes shrimp cocktails to impress the rich kid when he comes over for lunch. Finally Andy sees the error of his ways, but in earlier episodes he would never want to be pretentious--he was always telling Opie to be himself, and be happy with the simpler things in life.

Andy didn't often go in for nonsense. He would stand back and watch everyone make fools of themselves. But n the episode where the shoe salesman came into to town, and everyone thought he was a Hollywood talent scout, Andy fell right into it along with everyone else.

Also, Barney was a nervous wreck where Howard is a competant type. Another reason Andy would stick his neck out for Barn and not How. Howard was one of Ang's classmates (and Barney's too, probably) but the two tall ones were not real good friends till they were grown men.

Alan Melvin was always great when he popped up.

The "produce peddlers" episode is another great Melvin showcase.
