TV "The Goldbergs" Season 3 To Pay Tribute to Risky Business / MJ's Thriller Not Allowed

"The Goldbergs" to Pay Homage to Risky Business, But 'Thriller' Is Off Limits
by Vlada Gelman
August 4, 2015

Take those old records off the shelf, "Goldbergs" fans. The ABC comedy will pay tribute to the classic 1983 Tom Cruise film Risky Business in the Season 3 premiere, it was announced Tuesday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

I wanted to start with a big splash,” executive producer Adam Goldberg said. “We’re crashing cars, and we’re doing the whole thing… It’s going to be awesome.

Also on Goldberg’s radar for Season 3 is a nod to Short Circuit, when Beverly tasks the boys with building a robot.

(The show previously paid homage to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Goonies.)

Apparently not in the cards for the comedy, which is famously set in the year “1980-something,” is a tribute to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” music video. Despite generating a great script for such an episode, to air around Halloween, Goldberg says he heard back from those who protect the song’s rights and was told it will never see the light of day on a TV show.

We were just told by the writer of the song he doesn’t want his song to be aired on television,” Goldberg explained, to which star Jeff Garlin deadpanned, “Has he seen movies lately?

Other Panel Highlights:

- Next season, “every episode is about how I struggled with puberty, transitioning from middle school to high school,” Goldberg previewed.

Also on tap: making fun of giant ’80s hair.

- The writers have talked about a Bar Mitzvah installment for Adam.

If we were to do it, it would probably be this season,” Goldberg said, although star Sean Giambrone’s changing voice might present a challenge. “We’re just trying to figure out what the story would be.

(Goldberg, himself, had a Stephen King-themed Bar Mitzvah.)

- Natalie Alyn Lind's upcoming stint on "Gotham" doesn’t mean Adam and Dana’s romance is over.

I’ll explore long distance relationships when you’re young and in love,” Goldberg said.

Default 'The Goldbergs' 'Thriller' episode that got away

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/d...-happened.html

Quote:
There's more to making an '80s-set comedy like ABC's "The Goldbergs" than ticking off a list of pop-culture moments.

Because pop-culture moments all have lawyers.

Or, in the case of Rod Temperton, the British songwriter responsible for Michael Jackson's hit "Thriller," some outdated opinions about the relative value of television and movies.

Jenkintown's Adam F. Goldberg, who created the show based on his childhood and family, told reporters at the Television Critics Association's summer meetings in Beverly Hills Tuesday that hopes for a "Thriller" episode died when Temperton refused to grant permission, because, apparently, he doesn't want the song on television, only in films.

Quote:
"I've been told he doesn't change his mind," Goldberg told me afterward. "I'm heartbroken." The Michael Jackson Estate has rights to the choreography, but ABC, he said, was "going to chip in. I had everyone on board."
On a happier note, there will be a "Risky Business" homage this coming season, complete with tighty-whities and sliding across the floor.

"We're going to be sinking cars and we're going to be sliding in socks and underpants for sure -- how could you not? -- and singing," he said.

And on the homefront, Goldberg's getting all the cooperation he could want now from Philly's sports teams.

"All of them are on board because of what I've done with the Flyers. There was some article I read that I've given them like $2 million in free advertisement," he said, laughing. "So the president of the Eagles -- which is the hard one -- reached out and sent me a bunch of stuff and said, 'Whatever you want.' So I think they've seen the show has love, it's a Philadelphia show, that I love these teams and they're now kind of all on board."

It seems that a Thriller ep will be aired when Cleveland wins a Championship!
