Default This was Florida's definition of a TREAT when the family have extra money to spend???

Florida mentioned they had extra money to spend and they deserved a TREAT so if that was the case why didn't she suggest they order a pizza or have some chicken delivered? Or the family going out to dinner?

Her definition of a treat was buying a ROAST from the supermarket?

I guess cause they couldn't really afford to buy much meat usually. Back in the day Roasts were a big deal. Even if people had money I remember as a little girl a roast beef dinner back than was like Oh boy!!! Now it's kind of a boring meal!

Yeah it was a big hunk of bland meat/ roast with carrots and little potatoes cooked in the oven. Wasn't much taste really ! And my Mom and Aunts were good cooks, and all, just to me the roast dinner seemed really bland and boring!

Make a lasagna ! Now that is yummy!!! Or a ham dinner with all the trimmings!

It might well be bland (depending on the cook), but, that's what the gravy is for!

I guess they were tired of eating fried bologna every night. Remember that Cherry Kool-Aid was a big treat for themselves too!

I always preferred good old fashioned meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, which was like a basic Tuesday night meal ! LOL! Now that was GOOD!!!! Way better than what was supposed to be a fancy meal with that bland roast with the carrots and potatoes cooked with it!

I think this was in reference to meat prices having spiked in the late '70s. Remember the later opening of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where Mary rolls her eyes and reluctantly tosses a package of meat into her shopping cart, having looked at the high price?

Meat seemed to be a lot more expensive back in the day than it is now.

For example, I was watching an episode of Let's Make a Deal recently, and they were having the contestant guess the prices of certain food items. This took place obviously in the early 70s. They showed the price of a box of Rice-A-Roni as 33 cents. The cost of a six pack of Eskimo Pie ice cream bars was 69 cents, and the cost of a 10-pound canned ham was $10.75! Yikes! Considering minimum wage must have been about $1.25 at the time, $10.75 for a canned ham was a hell of a lot of money.

I have to admit I never got into pot roast with carrots and potatoes. I'll eat it if my mom makes it, but I can live without it.
