When did Larry move in?

I just watched Season 1's "No Children, No Dogs" and in it the trio informs Larry that they aren't allowed to have pets. But wouldn't Larry know that if he lived in the same building?

Were there any appearances of Larry between that episode and "Home Movies" in Season 2? I don't recall.

Nope, No Children, No Dogs was his 1st appearance and Home movies was his 2nd appearance.

It's not as far as I've seen. Do you think he was already living in the apartment at the time of "Home Movies"? I definitely don't think so at the time of "No Children No Dogs".

To me it's weird how in "Home Movies" they seem to act as if Larry was regular all along.

Yeah, even Roper knows who Larry is! Unless he is always hanging out at Jack's place and we just don't see it until Home Movies.

The girls seem to know Larry in "No Children, No Dogs," albeit as an acquaintance.

The impression I get from seeing Larry in "Home Movies" is that this has been a guy Jack has hung out with before, and probably visited the apartment a few times. But he was friends with Jack already before he actually moved in to the building.

Yeah, we see Larry's apartment for the first time a couple episodes later, in "Will the Real Jack Tripper..."

The girls probably knew Larry because Larry seemed to know every woman in town. I bet he was one of the "gatecrashers" Jack mentions he sneaked in with in the very first episode, "Man About the House."

Except that Janet and Chrissy didn't seem to know about the gatecrashers (evidenced by Janet not realizing the punch was spiked), and had no idea who Jack was. If he was, they probably left that part out.

Here's a looney theory with no corroborating evidence: If Jack and Larry were among the gatecrashers, and Jack and Janet don't remember (we don't know how much Chrissy remembered), then why wouldn't Larry want them to know what happened? Given that Janet tried to turn into Gypsy Rose Lee at the party, I've wondered for some time if something could have happened between Jack and Janet that night. COUNTERPOINT: Jack is a senseless drunk. It's doubtful he would have been able to put his clothes back on before falling asleep in the tub. COUNTER-COUNTER POINT: Except the pants don't actually have to come off, and they may have been in the tub for privacy. COUNTER-COUNTER-COUNTER POINT: Apparently, Janet *would* have been naked and not gotten dressed again.

This is just for speculation, but there are so many possibilities!

I am loving the deep thought! Seriously, it's fun to speculate. Although Janet did have her nightgown on, so she did get undressed and re-dressed in her nightie at some point. However, I don't think something happened between Jack and Janet.

I bet Jack had one drink and blacked out in the tub. Seems like everyone drank the punch, so no wonder the girls didn't recall the gatecrashers. It also sounded like it was a big party (perhaps the one they refer to in "The Party's Over," when the girls mention the bed collapsed from all the coats), so the gatecrashers could probably have sneaked in and out unnoticed.

I don't think the gatecrashers spiked the punch; I think Chrissy accidentally made it too strong, as she mentions she had never made punch before and put tequila, vodka, rum, and other stuff into it.

You're right, the sitcom formula is simply to hit the reset button at the end if every episode. Continuity tends to go out the window. But when a small group of writers does an entire season, there are usually some ideas they want to include that they have to dance around without bringing them in, even subconsciously.

It's possible there was some behind-the-scenes continuity. I'd love to hear from any of the writers on this.

I agree with you, continuity seems unimportant in older sitcoms. But I notice several inside jokes throughout the series that required some recalling of earlier episodes, like the repetition of "chocolate mousse." I think there were at least five or six times throughout the entire series that chocolate mousse is mentioned or featured in an episode. After the hit episode The Bake-Off, I bet this became a standing joke the writers kept using.
