(RNN) - Buddy Buie, a prolific rock and roll songwriter, died Saturday in Dothan, AL, after suffering a heart attack, according to the Dothan Eagle.

Associated with Classics IV and The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Buie is best known for the songs Traces, Spooky and Stormy and is credited with helping define the Southern Rock genre.

After an initial success with Classics IV, which formed in 1965, Buie's career reached new heights with The Atlanta Rhythm Section in the 1970s. The band charted a number of hits and played a command performance at the White House for President Carter's son's birthday.

"Just last week Buddy shared his enthusiasm, and support, for the band, saying he wanted to come hear the new songs we added to the show. We will miss Buddy’s contributions, musically, professionally, and most of all personally," The Atlanta Rhythm Section wrote Saturday on its Facebook page.

Buie was a profilic songwriter, penning 340 songs in the BMI catalog, nearly all of them crafted in Eufaula, AL, "on Thomas Mill Creek, where Buie had a small fishing trailer," according to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

An Alabama native who spent most of his songwriting career in Atlanta, Buie was inducted into both the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

Artists who recorded Buie's songs span rock and country genres and include Wynonna Judd, Garth Brooks, Gloria Estefan, Travis Tritt, David Sanborn, Carlos Santana and John Legend.

His music also appeared in films and TV shows, including Lost in Translation, Just Like Heaven and The Fighter.
