My mom went to buy her boyfriend a carrot cake and the place charged her $23.00?

Does that sound weird to anyone else?

It depends on the brand, size of the cake, etc. If it was an off brand from the local grocery store, then yes, I would say that's expensive. If it was from a bakery, then no, I don't think that would be too bad.

I tend to get my cakes from a box of Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. Some times on sale for 99cents although the boxes now can to close to $1.99.
. As for store decorated cakes, you pay a lot for the decorations. I worked at a store bakery and well I shouldn't share secrets but really most of cakes are already pre made at the factory headquarters. Out the store room comes frozen cake and all the local store does is slap on the frosting and decorate.

I try to keep Duncan Hines and Betty Crocker in business. The cake may not taste the best, but taste isn't my problem. Price!!

Bonnie it was a regular looking carrot cake which was round and when she said it was $23.00 it just made no damm sense. I didnt think it was possible for a cake to cost more than $12.00

Oh I was picturing a bigger cake . Like a square sheet cake! Just a regular round cake that is a bit high!

I hope it least tasted good and was decorated nice for that price!

Not sure if everything suddenly seems HIGH because I had to take a $10,000 pay cut two years ago lol

But I am only making $200 less after taxes so I wonder everything seems so damm high

I look at it this way: if the shop owners are good friends, or if the profits go to a charity, then it's all right to overpay.

Otherwise it's hard for me to justify big overpaying for food, when food banks could really use donations -- both monetary and the extra food you could buy.

I feel for you people on the coasts. You are getting soaked in comparison with food prices in the midwest. I just picked up some 11.5 oz. chips for 99 cents -- and their expiration date is October 2015! You can find 8-inch freshly baked pies as low as $2.99 - $3.99 if you try. Dollar Tree stores have had packs of Keebler crackers, around 12 oz. to 14.5 oz., at $1. You just can't beat that. I'm stocked up into about March of 2016!!

Dollar Tree is a great place to find food and they take coupons so you can save even more. My favorite place though is Big Lots. Their discount racks are often full and I stock up if they have something I like. The prices are usually half their normal cost. You can get a further reduction if the item is one day from the actual expiration date. For example, if they have bags of chips for .75 cents that have a best by date of Aug 1st, 2015 and you want to buy them on July 31st then most stores will discount them further if you bring it to a manager's attention and the more you buy the bigger the reduction. Potato chips and other food items will last for several weeks beyond their best by dates and I've brought home many items for a quarter or less because I waited till almost the last minute. If I were to wait and try to purchase it on the actual best by date then it would be removed from the shelf as Big Lots will not intentionally sell any items on or past the actual date.

It must be a VERY GOOD CAKE because nowadays,cheap stuff is complete crap!!

That's true, I work at a grocery store and a woman from New York came through my lane and was amazed at how much cheaper everything was. We do have alot of competing stores around so maybe that helps keep the prices low. Plus Michigan doesn't have taxes on food.

Oh !! That is why, see? I bet they advertise that they have the "Best cakes " in town type of thing!

There is a restaurant diner type place like that out here that advertises the best pies that you can get anywhere. LOL! They are good, but you could probably get the same thing at a grocery store bakery cheaper !!!!!!
