In this segment, she discusses being on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Maude, One Day at a Time, and Coach.

I am SO SO glad you posted this link. This woman is a CLASS ACT all the way. I learned so many things about her co stars and how they treated her.
Bonnie Franklin has a bit of a difficult rep but she treated La Fabray like the treasure she is. Watch this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPALKjf13KQ to see her at her absolute Emmy winning peak. Her singing voice is quite impressive and her comic timing with the legendary Sid Caesar is incredible. I personally loved when she would come on ODAAT. She was down to earth and wonderfully silly at the same time. Look for the part in the interview where she discusses how abominably they treated her on Murder She Wrote. Wonderful, wonderful piece even though the clueless interviewer was just asking her questions off a page and didn't seem to have a clue as to her actual career. Nanette is still alive today and seems like one of the kindest ladies in the business. She pays lovely tributes to her niece Shelley and her TV daughter Bonnie. Thanks for posting the link, Little RickyII! |

Agreed! And a cool thing too for me is she reminds me a lot of my Aunt! Even in her 80's, she still is bubbly and fun like Nanette/Grandma Romano!

While I like her, I'm not sure I agree about the "down to earth" part. I had always assumed she was probably a down-to-earth person, until I watched this interview. She seems rather boastful to me. For example, she talks about her appearance on Maude and goes on and on about what a great job she did and how Norman Lear "was so fabulously impressed." Then she says she has a theory that Norman Lear forgot to submit her name for an Emmy nomination; otherwise, she says "I probably would have had a fourth Emmy." It seems rather presumptuous of her to think she would have automatically won over everyone else if her name had been submitted. Towards the end of the interview, she says "I've won practically every award you can win, except an Oscar. I've had all kinds of citations." Just not too modest. And then there's that strange Bea Arthur comment. The interviewer was simply asking her what it was like appearing on Maude, then in her reply she says "Bea Arthur is one of my best friends. Not an easy friend, but when you love somebody, you put up with their problems." That seemed so unnecessary. If someone is your friend, you don't go telling the world that they have problems and are a difficult to deal with. All this aside, though, I do respect her talent. That clip you posted, I was actually looking at that a couple days ago. She was talented. Those old shows with Sid Caesar are wonderful, especially his years with Imogene Coca. But Nanette was good, too, and could certainly sing.

I agree that Miss Fabray gave an excellent interview for the Archive and it was nice to hear her say all those kudos re her experiences and colleagues on ODAAT. She was a real class act here.
I know I put this query out a little while ago but I never heard anything back so this is as good a place as any to ask if anyone's heard any recent news re Miss Fabray? She's due to be 95[!] in October yet I haven't heard anything mentioned from or about her in quite a few years [not even when her 'daughter' Miss Franklin died at age 69 in 2013]. I don't want to speculate about her current condition but I do hope she's as healthy, happy and well-cared for as possible at this time of her life. |

Joseph Campanella (Ed), is also still alive, at 90.
Pat Harrington is up to 85. |

My ODAAT double claim to fame is in the mid-'90s I saw Pat Harrington live on stage as the captain in a touring production of "Show Boat", lol, and in that same time period I saw Mackenzie Phillips as Rizzo in a touring production of "Grease".

As I'm watching these ODAAT episodes, Nanette looks younger than I remembered. A certain sign I'm getting old.
She did leave an impression on me, as I recalled her work on the series -- but for some of the other supporting cast, I had no recollection AT ALL (I used to watch a lot of syndicated, many years ago). |
