"The Last Man on Earth" Scoop from Comic-Con 2015
Comic-Con: "The Last Man on Earth's" Will Forte Teases the Return of Jason Sudeikis, Phil's Beard in Season 2
July 11, 2015 by Kate Stanhope "The Last Man on Earth" made the trek to San Diego for Comic-Con Saturday, and he didn't come alone. Will Forte, flanked by series co-stars Kristen Schaal and January Jones as well as executive producer Chris Miller and sporting an impressive beard, appeared at the convention to tease the upcoming second season of the hit comedy. However, getting spoilers for the serialized show — which kept fans on their toes throughout the first season with the surprise additions of stars like Mary Steenburgen and Boris Kodjoe — proved to be difficult. "We're still in the writing process," said Forte. "So I'm not even sure if I'm going to be in the show." Although the status of Jones' character, Melissa, was unknown at the end of season one, her appearance on the panel seemed to be a positive hint. "It does feel like it would be rude to bring January here if she weren’t coming back," said Miller. When Jones was later asked about Melissa's relationship with Todd (Mel Rodriguez), Forte joked, "It’s a really sweet relationship and it's just a shame that both those characters are dead." After seven seasons on the super secretive "Mad Men", Jones seemed unphased about the uncertainty surrounding Melissa's future. "I'm just in the dark all the time," she said. "That’s how I like it though." Also returning this season is Jason Sudeikis, who appeared briefly in the pilot episode and then again in the season finale as Phil's brother. "Jason Sudeikis will play a part in the upcoming season. Will he be in space? Maybe," teased Forte. "It might be flashbacks." As his appearance on the panel indicated, "the beard is definitely coming back," said Forte, who also stated Phil will go back to being Phil "for the time being" after briefly going by the name Tandy. The upcoming second season will also see the group "moving away from Tucson," said Forte. But beyond that, Forte was tight-lipped, particularly when asked about the addition of new faces. "We're going to try to keep surprises coming," he said. "I think part of the fun of last season was introducing all these characters, and I think people now think every couple episodes there will be an introduction of a character and that might still be the case, that might not." Because of the "open-ended" season one finale, Forte said the writing process has been challenging for season two. "It's almost like we're writing a new show so that's been tricky. Because there are just so many ways you could go with," he said. "We have our path now, and we're excited." Added Miller: "We're trying to find new ways to change the dynamic and keep people guessing." "The Last Man on Earth" returns on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 9:30 p.m. on Fox. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/liv...mic-con-808022 |
