I think it's certainly a possibility, especially if Dub planned to kill himself as well...

That's the scenario I leaned towards. After killing Latricia, Dub takes Chance deep into the woods or something, kills Chance, then turns the gun on himself. Because his emotions had to be running high and he may have believed that if they went on the run, eventually they would have been caught and Chance would be taken from him. The "If I can't have you, no one will!" motive isn't exactly a recent invention.
