CNN has a series running on Thursday evenings, about the 1970s. This past Thursday's was about 70's television.
Bob Newhart was interviewed for this documentary, and they showed some very brief clips of Bob, Suzanne, and Bill. Bob made his usual comment about not wanting to do a show where the kids run over Daddy, and how this show stepped around that. I'm thinking that this episode will be online soon, if it isn't already. |

I was born in 1976 so I wasn't around to watch any of those Norman Lear shows and the reruns of them never interested me, as a kid I was used to the silly comedies like Three's Company, Laverne & Shirley, Diff'rent Strokes that I could tell the difference between those and the Norman Lear shows.
In a way even though shows like All In The Family were popular due to the topical humor and with the country just coming out of Vietnam that viewers could relate but even audiences know when enough is enough which is why the family style sitcoms made a comeback at the end of the 70's. In a way those Norman Lear shows were pretty depressing. |

This episode was scheduled to encore now at 9:00 but it's not on, preempted for breaking news. CNN just lost my potential viewership.

Very interesting first episode, of how TV evolved from the silly shows of the 1960's to more adult themed and even serious shows, like Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, MASH, All in the Family, etc. Norman Lear was a real force on TV in the 1970's, he was all over the place, with many more successes than flops.
Interestingly, in the late 1970's, the 1950's nostalgia was in style which how Happy Days came into being, then Laverne and Shirley, and then Charlie's Angels, the Love Boat, etc. I am sorry, but the ABC shows were garbage outside of Barney Miller and Mork from Ork. ABC was FOX in the 1970's. Loved how they taught a history lesson that there were only three channels and PBS back in the day, and it was cool how they did touch on PBS with Monty Python, Masterpiece Theater and the incredible I. Claudius. Or the advent of the miniseries. Actually, they could about do a miniseries of 1970s TV itself. |
