Hey guys, 40 years ago, the late Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. better known as John Denver hit #1 on both the Country Chart and the Pop Chart with the song "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" The song hit #1 on the Country Chart on May 31, 1975 and a week later on June 7th, the song hit #1 on the Pop Chart and they each spent a week on those charts The song was also #5 on the Adult Contemporary Chart here in America and it was also #1 in Canada on the Pop, Country and AC Charts The song struck Gold and the album "Back Home Again" went Triple Platinum and hit #1 on the Pop Album Chart won John Denver an American Music Award in 1975 for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist, a Country Music Association for Entertainer of the Year and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special for "An Evening With John Denver" The song was also featured on the 1993 film Son in-Law Starring MTV Legend Pauly Shore and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen of Saved by the Bell and 90210 Fame The song still remains a cult favorite to this day and now, here it is: The Late John Denver and my favorite John Denver Song "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" Check it out! |

I've never heard this song referred to as a 'cult favorite' but it's easily one of the worst of the 70's. It was hugely popular around here and in very heavy rotation but I hated it with a passion then and still do. John Denver won his 1975 Entertainer of the Year award based solely on "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" beating out Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Ronnie Milsap, and Conway Twitty, all of whom were more deserving. The presenter, Charlie Rich, voiced his displeasure by burning the award ballot after reading it.

I loved the stuff he did with the Muppets, he was always fun
I remember going on a trip somewhere with one of my friend's mom driving and she was playing a John Denver tape; I asked if we could put something else on and she said sure, just pick out a tape from my case - they were ALL John Denver tapes. |

I love John Denver, even Thank God I'm a country boy. It's a little corny, but it's a fun song! I think my favorite JD song would be Country Roads, take me home and Rocky Mountain High!

I would have to go with "Annie's Song" as my favorite of his. "FAR OUT!"
Just like Charlene Darling Wash on The Andy Griffith Show, "That one makes me cry!" |
