The Horrible TV Land edits...

I was watching Room at the Bottom and Chrissy's Cousin on TVLand. I cannot believe how horribly mangled the episodes have been edited. They have gone from 22 minutes to under 20. If anybody watched Chrissy's Cousin, they edited the original commercial break, you see Jack's face where the applause was to start, then you hear him talking, while you see his up close shot, but his mouth isn't moving. It's horrible!!!

Most shows are edited while in syndication because the FCC has added more time allowed for commercials several times. That means things get cut so whoever airs it can sell more commercial time.

What I don't like is that all but one of the phone conversations with Chrissy before Suzanne was fired were cut. This just seems like further insult, even though it's the most reasonable thing to take out. And I'm sure most of the guys out there hate not seeing the scene where Jack calls Terri out to talk about her violin playing.

I understand the FCC thing. I think it's bad how they are editing from the already edited episodes.

Not only that but the episodes are sped up a bit to add more commercials than what's necessary.

TV Land edits are different from the syndication edits...
The syndications (with the exception of the tag scenes) show about 95% of the episode...
Some of the edits however, took out some action
Case in point: In the episode "Two Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", the scene where Jack and Janet were at the restaurants looking for Terri and the Host put up the velvet rope and Jack flipped over it, that's not in the syndicated episode but on the TV Land episode

When TV Land first aired the show, we we shocked that they showed tag scenes that haven't been seen in decades. In some cases, they had to cut out some slight important scenes
Example: In "One Hundred Dollars A What", they cut out a few minutes of the scene when Jack and Janet were looking for Chrissy at that convention, but in turn we were able to watch the tag scene of Suzanne Somers' last full episode

There were some episodes that didn't make sense to cut because they didn't show the tag scene or they were crucial to the story
In "Handcuffed" when Mr. Furley came in with the blowtorch and Janet's line of "He cuts and cooks The roast beef) at the same time" was abruptly cut
Or the episode "The Lifesaver" that entire scene when Jack and Janet would make noise to piss off Furley and Chrissy made "silent" noise

Now with the 36-minute TV Land episodes, they're cutting out more of the show....

I do appreciate that Nick-at-Nite/TV Land restored the original tags, which had been cut since going into syndication. (Someone told me they were cut as soon as reruns appeared on ABC daytime.) I never saw episode-resolving scenes like Jack making good on his Uncle Fremont's bad check (from the tag) or the appearance of Chrissy's mysterious diary-writer (also only from the tag), as well as Jack getting his due in the pie fight. I didn't see a lot of these until they were on Nick or I had the DVD set, so Nick did do something positive here, though it did require sacrifice in other parts of the episodes.

I see what you mean about the tags at the end. Prior to the time that Nick-at-Nite and TV Land got their hands on the show, I had seen "Roper's Car" a bunch of times. In all of the times that I had seen it, the last scene was each of the women putting their half of the money that Mr. Roper had given them in their bras. I never knew what happened to the extra hundred dollars that they were given. I was in my thirties when I finally learned that it was used to buy a coat for Mrs. Roper!
