Maybe Mr. Martinelli should've hired a second worker/assistant, it was probably too much for one kid (Peter). Mr. Martinelli was probably too cheap to hire a second person and poor Peter got blamed for bikes not being fixed on time.

Peter was a hack - they were just lucky that none of the bicycles he worked on didn't burst into flames.

Bonnie you are a sweet heart and this is by no means offense to you, but Peter was terrible at his job lol. I mean Peter was trying his best. Not like at the Ice Cream parlor where he was just lazy. But even at the bike shop, he wasn't paying attention.

The problem was that Peter worked too slowly and no one got their bikes back on time. It didn't take Mr. Martinelli long to realize that that was bad for business and that he couldn't continue to employ Peter at his shop or he would lose all his customers!

Yep. Peter took 3 days to work on one bike.

No, Peter was slow, period. Hiring another worker would not have made Peter work any faster.

Question

Maybe Mr. Martinelli didn't give him sufficient training?

The reason Mr. Matinelli hired Peter in the first place was because he already knew how to fix bikes and therefore wouldn't require any training. He had lots of experience fixing his own bike and his siblings bikes. He was just too thorough in how he did it and therefore took a lot of time on each bike. Since Mr. Martinelli was running a business he needed someone who could get bikes repaired in a more timely fashion in order to meet deadlines.
