TV Shows That Got Canceled Despite Being Renewed

What shows do you know of got the axe despite getting a (formal or informal) renewal announcement?

Arsenio Hall's revival talk show got a 2nd Season renewal in Feb. 2014 and then got the cancellation notice in May. Jay Leno actually announced the renewal on the show.

CBS had verbally assured Sherwood Schwartz that Gilligan's Island would be picked up for a 4th season.

Some of the cast members had even bought homes in anticipation of the series being renewed.

But because of pressure from the President of CBS, his wife and the fans, Gilligan's Island became the sacrificial lamb at the last minute to save Gunsmoke from cancellation (at the last minute, while everyone was on vacation).

MTV renewed the reality show "Buckwild" for a 2nd Season in Feb. 2013.

It was then canceled in April after the accidental death of star Shain Gandee.

Savannah on the WB network was all but renewed for a third season, but the WB decided to test a new show in its timeslot to see how it would do. If that show failed, then Savannah would be renewed. Unfortunately, that show was Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, which became the biggest hit the network ever had at the time. Savannah was cancelled.

HBO canceled "Tell Me You Love Me" (2007) after renewing it for a 2nd Season. The decision was mutual betw. the network and creator Cynthia Mort.

She said, "Given the considerable amount of time that has passed and despite the best efforts of everyone involved, we were unable to find the direction of the show for the second season."

ABC's Invasion. It was coming back for a second season, I remember they even had some kind of contest that tied in with the second season premiere.

The Canadian police drama "The Badge" was renewed for the 2010-11 season, but it never happened.

It aired on CBS in the U.S. and was canceled after airing 3 eps.

I even specifically recall that it was Jay Leno, who during Hall's monologue, came out as a surprise guest and gave Arsenio the news that his show had indeed been picked up for a second season. The crowd went Craaaazy!

El Rey Network had renewed "Matador" for a 2nd season before it launched in July 2014. It was then canceled in November because the executives weren't happy w/ its poor viewership overseas.

The network said, “Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level-creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.

Best Of The West (1981) was renewed for a second season but was cancelled when the main actor went on to Silver Spoons.

The HBO series "Luck" (2011-12) had just begun production on Season 2 when it got canned. It was canceled due to animal safety concerns for the horses used on-set after complaints were made from PETA and AHA.

Investigations were made after two horses were euthanized after on-set injuries and HBO decided to halt the production. The network said, "We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production. Accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future."

The footage from the scrapped 2nd season has never been released.

Dark Angel was renewed for a third season. FOX had told the cast and crew, and It was even announced in a newspaper article. But when it came to upfronts, they changed their mind and cancelled it.

Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo was to go another season, until that scandal broke out.

VH1 has cancelled "Hindsight" — even though it renewed the time-traveling drama for Season 2 in March, EW.com reports.

Scripted series have been a successful part of VH1’s primetime line-up since 2010 and will continue to be in the future,” the network said in a statement.

We love Hindsight and couldn’t be more proud of the series. But in this overcrowded and rapidly changing climate, we need to carve out VH1’s distinct place in the scripted marketplace and deliver the biggest audiences possible for our series. As a result, we’re no longer moving forward with a second season of the show.

I believe CBS granted Newhart another season (ratings were still strong), but Bob Newhart decided eight seasons was enough.

It did, however, lead to the short-lived Bob a year or two later.
