On Mayberry RFD in addition to being the sole owner of the gas station. Goober was also Mayberry's only law enforcement (One MRFD episode The Caper actually addressed why this is a bad idea) The thing that got me about was why on earth would the City of Mayberry want Goober to be a deputy of any capacity, particularly after it was shown in Goodbye Sherriff Taylor and Suppose Andy Gets Sick that Goober is not deputy material and in the latter's case would probably have gotten him banned from even being deputized from helping with emergencies.

To me I think it would have been best for the show had after Andy left Mayberry's law enforcement was taken over by the state police as it would have made a lot more sense than giving Goober a badge and a gun and authority to abuse

Somehow a guy with the name of Goober doesn't inspire confidence as a law man or peace officer. As I haven't seen Mayberry RFD for years, did Goober straighten up and quit acting goofy as he used to on TAGS? If not, then it would be ludicrous to give a gun and badge to a guy like him, particularly as the town's only law officer.

Goober still acted goofy in Mayberry RFD and he didn't straigten up. The only reason I could think of they made Goober a deputy on MRFD was the people running the show wanted someone Barney Fifish to be the Deputy and didn't want to create a new character, so they put Goober in. Personally I think they should have gotten Bernard Fox to play a new law officer in a similar vein to Colonel Crittindon on Hogan's heroes. I think he would have brought the right amount of seriousness and comedy the show needed.

I would like to see Mayberry R.F.D. again because I havent seen it in years but maybe I'm dodging a bullet. Goober, of all people, Sheriff? They should have given it to Ken Barry's character or create a new character. Oh, at the very least did Goob get rid of that stupid hat he used to wear?

No he didn't. That was his trademark. He even wore it for years on Hee Haw.

I'm not an expert on RFD, but didn't Goober eventually become slightly less goofy on RFD? If I'm not mistaken, didn't he even look slightly cooler on RFD. Perhaps he didn't wear his pants as high or something.

I wasn't aware that he was the only law enforcement after Andy left. That' interesting.

I haven't seen RFD in YEARS but as I remember, he DID become slightly less goofy.

And I also didn't know he became that after Andy left. Now that was RIDICULOS!

So that's what they did when Andy left... I haven't seen an episode of MRFD since they were first run and couldn't remember, but this seems very unrealistic, storywise.

Heck, they should have run Howard for Sherriff or something.

I can understand the story was turned away from the Sherriff theme, but it seems like the writers just went too slack here, there should have been at least a minor character as Sherriff So-and-so mentioned, maybe seen sometimes, that Goober could mention... kind of like Wally or the Mayor.

Bad enough the Barber "went away" and everyone had to apparently go to Mount Pilot for a simple haircut, but law enforcement couldn't just go untended to... and Goober alone?

No way.

Yeah even Floyd left Andy Griffith Show towards the end. Wasnt he sick? I havent seen Mayberry R.F.D. in forever but how come Ken Barry's character couldnt be the sheriff or even the deputy?

Howard McNear (Floyd) suffered a stroke, if you watch him later in the series he's always sitting or leaning against something.

they could have show the sherrif Patterson that was refered to in return to mayberry
