Ann Romano would NEVER have consorted with a man she knew was married and had a family.
As soon as she found out some shmuck slept with her under false pretenses she would have kicked him to the curb. Instead she embarks on an affair with this liar/cheater and then when he leaves his wife and family for her, decides he doesn't want her after all because he needs to find himself. Instead of tearing his head off in her usual ball busting Ann Romano fashion, she just pats him on the head, cries with him and tells him she understands. What the what? I hated this arc, couldn't stand the man she cheated with and couldn't believe what a doormat/hoochie she was in this episode. Yes, she felt enormous guilt as she should have. But it was way out of character for her to knowingly sleep with a married man in the first place, given what a strong, confident, liberated/no BS woman she portrayed herself to be. This guy was such a loser, yet for some reason he was portrayed as one of the great loves of her life. She criticized Ed, David and Nick for every little slight, yet she lets this leech lie to her, use her as a way to get out of his marriage and then is overly sympathetic to him when he dumps her. Just awful. Thoughts??? |

Ann really came off as such a LOSER in this episode. She's always going on about how she's liberated and independent and then she allows herself to become a total doormat and she allows herself to be used. She showed no self respect in this episode. Barbara was the only one who snubbed Ann for behaving like such a ho. Barbara gave her the silent treatment.
Ann was so pathetic. The whole episode was pitiful. It was only when the man DUMPED Ann that Ann looks at herself in the mirror and says "welcome back." Gimme an 'effing break. If that guy didn't dump Ann, Ann would continue to be his little sex toy on the side. This episode showed women how to be WEAK. |

Thank you! I am glad I am not the only one who hated this ridiculous arc.
That look she gave herself in the mirror was at least an acknowledgment to the audience that she would be back to her old self the next week but still the whole story line made no sense with the character she had previously portrayed. Barbara had the right reaction and reacted similarly when Julie cheated on Max. I actually found that infidelity IN character because Julie was such a mess in general. However Ann's behavior made no logical sense. |

^^^ I agree. The storyline made no sense whatsoever as Ann was behaving totally out of character. I'm glad that Barbara showed her disapproval with the cold shoulder for Ann. At least someone had the nerve to let Ann know what she was doing wasn't okay. Ann was definitely setting a poor example for her girls.

Absolutely. Ann would never have made that choice when she was trying to be a feminist role model for her teens. It didn't make any sense.
Oh, and the worst part was when Carl or whatever his name was, goes home and immediately gets his wife to grant him a divorce and his kids are instantly supportive of their family breaking up. How convenient! Stupid writers!

I see your points. I really do. BUT, sometimes when you find out your with a married man or woman, its tough to leave. I have NO experience on the subject but it must be tough because there's a lot of love there. You just can't shut it off. If I'm Ann, I would have broken it off. There's no good that could come out of it and your asking for a hell of a lot of trouble.

What a lot of people fail to understand is that women have sexual needs also. And just like any man, are prone to make mistakes and bad judgment when they seek to fulfill these needs with people that just aren't available to them. So realistically I don't fault Ann as much as I fault the married man who took the vows to be faithful to his wife. Ann definitely gets a pass on this one.

Very true Bonnie. But Ann must figure a married man is better than some of the losers she's gone out with.

Putting the adultery issue aside for a moment.
The Ann Romano I know would NEVER put up with a guy like this. She threw away a perfectly good husband and provider because she wanted to be independent. She and he would argue constantly over the littlest of things. She was a pitbull. Same with David, Nick, Sam and any number of men she went out with. She went to battle with both Connors and Davenport, Francine, her own mother and basically any person, male or female she had a conflict with. She once slapped the sugar out of Julie because she made a sassy comment. Are we to believe that she would instantly forgive a man who pursued and seduced her without informing her of his marital status? Then proceed to sleep with him on the DL until he used her to get out of his marriage. And then when he dumps her after all of that, cry with him and act like it was a huge learning experience for both of them? No way, the Ann Romano the audience knew would have read him the riot act the very MINUTE she found out he was married. She would NEVER have given him the time of day after that. She would NEVER have let her girls see her as needy and pathetic as that. Thanks for reading, I have enjoyed reading all of your responses. |

Ann showed her true weakness and neediness in this episode. Her ex husband Ed was too good to her, so she threw him aside to be "independent" yet when that married guy treats HER like crap, she accepts it. She welcomes the mental abuse. What a hypocrite. Lucky for Ed that Ann divorced him. He was better off without her.
When guys are good to Ann, she treats them like poop. When guys lie, cheat and deceive, she embraces them with love. How sad and pitiful. |

Let the church say AMEN!
I always thought Ed was way too good for her. I don't understand why she would uproot her children when they were still in high school so she could break up an intact family in order to "find herself". As far as we knew Ed was a good provider, father and never cheated. So of course she dumps him. She meets this loser who deceives her into thinking he is single and puts up with all sorts of humiliation because of him and barely registers a complaint. What was it about this guy that turned her into a sniveling idiot? Didn't make any sense. Maybe he was great in the sack?

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Ann was not a perfect woman. Even the strong ones may have some weak points and fall short from time to time. I think that is was the writers show. Plus, it draws reaction from viewers like us. Yes, we hate the Ann did what she did but it got us talking about it. I loved the character of Ann Romano with her flaws and all. Its like the writers are telling a story arc with this woman, her trials, ups and downs. I am very intrigued as I watch each season over again. There is something different and unique about each season. I know some have an issue with Ann remarrying but I think that enough time passed where Ann was able to find her self and accomplish self goals/achievements. I think that although she did remarry the writers linked her with a man who was good for her. Sam Royer was laid back and very supportive of Ann achieving what she desired and did not hold her back like Ed did. Heck, she got a job offer to go England and Sam was all for it and had her back. So yes, in the story telling arc, Ann (over a course of time and pursuing) did get a happy ending and she deserved it. |

I will say as much as I HATED Ann's spineless, immoral behavior in this episode I really appreciated the fact that she did not in any way justify her behavior but in fact beat herself up about it constantly and said that they were hurting people.
Her lover on the other hand (whatever his name was) was very narcissistic and self serving and seemed not to care about either his wife or Ann or his children. Why Ann thought he was worth all the trouble is hard to imagine. I will say Bonnie Franklin's acting was excellent in this arc, the character's guilt washed all over her face. I am the first one to knock her when she chews the scenery but she held back from her excesses and underplayed her scenes very effectively. |

WOW!!! I think this is the thread from the ep I just saw? Was it a three part ep about Ann dating a married man? This is strange, because IDK why I don't really remember these eps much?
Part one was on tonight and I was BORED to tears!!!! I found the guy to be completely boring and nothing to get excited about! And than finding out he was married! These eps weren't too memorable to me than, and well I'll watch the next two again. But the guy seemed like an A hole and wasn't that great looking!!! I don't see why Ann would be this head over heals for him and than finding out he was married. Kick his A** to the curb, with his goofy comb over or bad toupee!!! LOL!!! If indeed this is the right thread that I am posting on??? |
