Default Why do network and cable tv stations place new shows in poor time slots and expect

SUCCESS???

This was something I never understood when it came to network or cable television because the show is not being given an opportunity to succeed. For example, ABC scheduled a new show called "Cristela" on Friday nights at 9:30pm and expected good ratings?? Why not give people a chance to see the show and make a decision to see if they like watching it? So of course "Cristela" was recently cancelled by ABC which was odd because the show never had a chance to succeed. The network gave their other show "black-ish" a chance to succeed by allowing viewers to sample the show on wednesday nights. Cable stations also do the same thing when it comes to adding new shows to their schedule. I remember the Hallmark channel adding the Bob Newhart show to it's lineup and then placed it in the 1am time slot. Seems like since the show was a new addition it would have aired at 9pm since more people are awake at that time instead of 1am in the morning. Then of course Hallmark removes the show from the schedule after a month due to low ratings which shouldn't have been surprising at all. I guess this will remain a network and cable tv station mystery when it comes to new shows.

This is why Shout!'s full-series release of The Bob Newhart Show is and has been a great purchase in my opinion, because why bother to try to find it on Hallmark when they're just going to move it around, when you can have all of it at once, and without commercials to boot?

But sometimes you have to sample a new show before deciding to buy it on DVD. Like now I am sampling One Day at a Time and It;s a show I would never buy on DVD

That's a good point! I sampled Barney Miller from WGN Chicago (now WGN America), and I thought it was a very entertaining show. I purchased Shout!'s release of that, and such has been very much borne out.

I'll often watch an episode of a show someone has posted on youtube, and if I like what I see I'll purchase the set.
