Default The lady who played the principal whose office was vandalized

I noticed that when she appeared the audience starting clapping. She also played Penny's social worker on Good Times

Anyone know what she is known for?

BTW: Why the hell was barbara looking like a japenese massage therapist in the beginning of this episode?

That was Alice Ghostley. At the time she was known for her roles in Bewitched and Mayberry RFD. She later went on to have a memorable role in Designing Women.

She did both shows back to back during that particular season (1977-1978).

I think she was rehearsing for the school play . That would explain why she was there after school when the vandalism took place!

I wondered the same thing. She was just there in that Japanese costume and I wondered why she was dressed like that walking into the principal's office. Maybe there was another scene before that was edited out. You're right it was a bad edit if that was the case.

She was also in the movie Grease. She taught Auto Shop.
Remember the song "Greased Lightning"?
lol

Her voice sounds like a female version of Paul Lynde lol

Well I will probably never see the uncut version unless someone gives me the series on DVD as a gift lol

I heard a comic back in 1992 named Roger Kabler do that impersonation. He said "Why all the looong faces?" I thought he was imitating Alice Ghostley to find out it was really Paul Lynde. LOL. Ironic enough that you post the thing I always thought of.

Yes definitely, lol; no coincidence either, as Alice and Paul both debuted in New Faces on Broadway together in 1954 (along with Charlotte Rae, and Cloris Leachman). I always thought Alice and Paul should have played a couple since their speech patterns are so similar, and they may very well have appeared together on a '60s sitcom before, I can't recall at the moment.

Alice's most famous role was indeed as Bernice Clifton on Designing Women*. She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Emmy for that role in 1992.

*(I always found it interesting that the more proper grammar usage is someone is "in" a movie, yet they are "on" a television series)

She was known for being on Bewitched as Ismarelda. This is why they were clapping. She played a major role on Bewitched from 1969-1973

Alice Ghostley was a hoot in most her roles. I enjoyed her as Esmerelda and her Bernice Clifton is a classic.
