Default Why would Ann say that "a good spanking" made Ed a good father?

Ann tells Julie and Barbara how good of a father Ed has been to them, and she lists three (3) things: that he cried sometimes, that he prayed a lot, and that he gave them a good spanking when needed. Why spanking? Why not just say that he gave them guidance? Also, as a side note, what do you think she meant by "good spanking"? How hard and bad do you think he hit them?

A good spanking is good enough for me. My mother was a good mother to me. She was, in part because she was able to tap my butt if I needed it and I was grateful for it. So no, I don't see an issue with that at all.

^^^ Neither do I.

Ed was a very good father. He did not "beat" his kids. He gave them a little spanking when they were brats. So?

Yep . Back when I was growing up and before that the motto was spare the rod and spoil the child. Children got a little spanking or smack as discipline. Not severe beating or child abuse, but parents kept kids in line back than because we knew we would get spanked or a slap if we were bad!

What do you think he used to hit them with? Do you think he used just his hand?

Yes, just his hand. Ed was a good man/father from that time period. He wasn't a child abuser! You can tell that the girls love Ed and aren't afraid of him and pretending to love him cause they have to!

Ann used that cutting board on Alex, LOL, so she may not have always used her hand when she spanked the girls!! For a show that was supposed to be about a forward-looking, modern woman, Ann was actually very old-fashioned when it came to child-raising. She slapped the fire out of Julie for mouthing off! She also slapped Alex for breaking that vase. A funny scene is in season one where Ann gets the girls to go to bed by telling them they are not too old to be spanked and claps her hands, LOL. They move quickly. They must know the history!!

Questions. Who do you think disciplined more, Ed or Ann? Which one had you rather be disciplined by, Ed or Ann? I think Ann did more of the day-to-day discipline because she was at home with the girls, but from the way their marriage sounds Ed probably handled more of the "serious" discipline. And me, I had rather be disciplined by Ed. I'm sure it wouldn't be fun because I'm sure he could get strict if you had done something wrong and he was mad, but I would be afraid of Ann, LOL.

I rather be disciplined by Ed. As far as spanking, I'm sure he never gave more than a swat or two on the backend by hand only, maybe just firm enough to sting a little. Probably a couple of swats followed by a somewhat stern lecture, and then they moved on. From what I gathered in the episode "Dad Comes Back", Ed did indeed handle most of the discipline when Julie and Barbara were younger. But, there is plenty of evidence to demonstrate that Ann definitely did some discipline as well. She spanked them too. In a later season episode it is revealed that Ann spanked Barbara one time for putting apple cores in the clothes hamper, which Julie actually did and blamed Barbara. I certainly in no way see Ann being abusive, but I think with her temper that she might be rougher than Ed with discipline. Still, I'm sure getting in trouble with Ed would be no picnic for a kid either.

I love Ed! He's a nice man and a good looking older man too!

He guest starred on Quincy today, playing a police lieutenant ! He was really good in that role.

Okay, Ed spanked the girls on occasion when they were young. But, I wonder what Ed would have thought about Ann slapping Julie for mouthing in the older man episode? Do you think Ed would have approved of the slap?
