When TV Land was starting out back in the '90s, they used to air vintage commercials during the breaks called "Retromercials". At the time, the youngest retro ad they played (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) I believe was a Joe Isuzu commercial from the late '80s. With time marching on, ads from the '90s would be old school now.
This made me wonder...If TV Land still did Retromercials, which '90s ads would now be considered "classic". A few came to mind: * The Taco Bell chihuahua ads ("Yo quiero Taco Bell") * Ray Charles hawking Diet Pepsi ("You got the right one, baby, uh-huh!") * Some of the Little Caesars advertising from that era. * TV Land also loved to air ads that featured celebrities before they became famous. For example, this phone ad featuring a post-"Mickey Mouse Club" Britney Spears would fit the bill. https://youtu.be/5lAkkaPeMk8 Now it's your turn, what else would you add to the list? |

I loved the retromericals as well. I dont know what would be considered a retromercial now. I cant remember any classic commericals that have aired over the past decade.

You said it, Bonniegirl! Rumor has it, METV has kind of adopted the Retromercial format for their channel. Not sure if that's true, though. Usual criteria for being a TV Land Retromercial would come down to either one or a combination of these four things. NOTE: I'm sure there are others, but these are the four most popular:
1. Pop culture resonance ("Where's The Beef?", "He likes it! Hey, Mikey!") 2. A classic character (Bucky Beaver, Speedy, the aforementioned Joe Isuzu) 3. A memorable slogan or jingle (The Jordache Look, Reach Out & Touch Someone) 4. A celebrity or "Before They Were Stars" appearance (Ricardo Montalbán hawking Cordobas or a pre-Partridge Family Susan Dey in an ad for a portable hair dryer) Which makes me wonder where would this jeans ad, which was a Retromercial back in the day, fall under? https://youtu.be/Yw1LfI5kATk mets82: There was one ad I forgot to put in my initial list: The "Got Milk?" campaign, specifically the "Aaron Burr" spot (Heck, it won a Clio). |

If Only TV Land can reinstate the Retromericals by now, they can air ads from the 1980s & the 1990s.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT0uLJQHXBU There's some other TV commercial from the 1980's that I remember. It involved some teenage brunette girl who was moping around at her mother about how a shirt she wanted to wear wasn't clean yet for her date with Eric. She kept emphasizing his name like he was the BMOC. I don't remember whether it was for Tide or Cheer or whatever anymore though. |
