Loved reading your reviews of MAUDE. I agree "Guilt Trip" is without a doubt the season's best, with "The Gay Bar" probably in second place. Conversely, I find "The Flying Saucer" to be one of the series' silliest and worst installments (behind "Captain Hero").
I would have included "Vivian's Decision" and "Carol's Dilemma" as well as the last three episodes that set up the new premise. Even though they aren't great, at least they offered something fresh. This is the season I found the show starting to look tired, and it's probably my least favorite of the six. |

Hi, Kasey! Thanks for reading and commenting. It's been a pleasure watching and discussing MAUDE these past few weeks.
"The Flying Saucer" is an episode that stretches the bounds of realism and therefore wouldn't be one I'd ordinarily expect to work, but the script is so tight that the comedy is able to compensate. In fact, I find the installment funnier and funnier with each viewing, and no one is more surprised about that than I am! As for the prior season's "Captain Hero," not only is it cartoonishly broad, but the mental illness theme is handled without any trace of subtlety. It's overbearing and unpleasant, not to mention humorless. Stay tuned next week for the start of RHODA! |
