Default The precinct office was always filthy...

Why?

They surely could've had their wives come in a clean up once in a while.

Or wouldn't the precinct have had at least one janitor?

It added to the old rundown building affect I guess. In that era (the 70's) on TV and movies a lot of times they portrayed NY as being dirty and gritty!

Cool

Being police officers I think they had more important things to do than tidying up!

In Barney Miller: Season 2,Episode 9,a rat scampers around the precinct and bites Wojehowicz. This might be best episode to show the building be rundown.

Kojak's office and squad room looked a lot like Barney Miller. Green walls, files and papers everywhere, people smoking.

And remember that Nick was sad that they were spraying for cockroaches, as they were the closest things he had to a pet.

If the precinct was all neat and clean, it wouldn't look real. I see some of those types of shows they make today and everything is too perfect, looks fake.

This was my first thought. New York was always portrayed as gritty in the 70-80s in lot of shows. Even Night Court. (which had many of the same guest stars)

Barney Miller's 12th Precinct was supposed to be the bottom of the barrel.

EXACTLY!!!!

I never really was into Barney Miller till recently!!! I remember my Mom and Dad loving it first run, and I thought it was a show for "old people"! LOL My parents were probably younger than I am now!!!

So I started watching on Antenna not too long ago, and really like this show!!!! I think the dirty, gritty bottom of the barrel precinct adds to the charm of the show!!!! It wouldn't be the same or as funny if it was a modern, clean office/precinct!

So Antenna took it off in the afternoon, and put it on 9PM PST!!!! That is when they show the stupid local news broadcast ,so no more Barney Miller for me on Antenna!!!!

I got into it when they would show it on Sunday nights. I remember a couple of episodes from my childhood, my mother loved the show.

I'm reminded of Taxi with the mentions of insects, and they also had other vermin (Louie catching a mouse).

There's truth in real life everywhere, not just NYC, about guys not being good with "housework." I once had to mop the hallway in the local college's Physics department -- all male -- and my mop water became as dark as black coffee!!
